Bobal De Sanjuan Vinas Viejas 2012 Product #29655 (In Stock)
Bobal De Sanjuan Vinas Viejas 2012 Bobal De Sanjuan Vinas Viejas 2012

Big and rich with plenty of power and a nice floral note, too.

"This 100% Bobal (60 to 80-year-old vines), aged four months in concrete, represents a terrific buy. It possesses excellent delineation as well as lots of blueberry and sweet and sour cherry fruit intermixed with notions of chalk and strawberries. Medium-bodied and fruity with attractive texture as well as purity, it should drink well for several years."Wine Advocate 88 points

Gonzaga Terre Di San Leonardo Rosso Alto Adige 2012 Product #31941 (In Stock)

A Bordeaux blend with a distinctly Italian accent, this fifty fifty blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot hails from Trentino Alto Adige. With aromas of raspberries, ripe cherries, and a hint of tobacco, it invites you to take a sip and enjoy the food friendly acidity and pleasingly dry finish. Mostly aged in large Slovenian casks, but with a touch of French barrique, it's a steal for the level of sophistication in the bottle.

Pago Casa Gran Falcata Arenal Tinto 2012 Product #32119 (In Stock)
Pago Casa Gran Falcata Arenal Tinto 2012 Pago Casa Gran Falcata Arenal Tinto 2012

“Arenal” refers to the sandy, free-draining, soils where Pago Casa Gran grows the grapes for this organically farmed blend of Garnacha Tintorera and Monestrell.  “Falcata” is the name of a special sword that was common in Valencia hundreds of years ago.  Each blade was made to measure for an individual warrior, forged and trimmed to be the same length as their arm.  When the fighter died, his blade was buried with him.

Winemaker Carlos Laso crafts his Arenal to reflect the region’s heritage by marrying the purity and elegance of well-drained, sandy, soils with Valencia’s intense ripeness and lots of minerality and spice from 14 months in French oak.  The wine is dark and deeply colored with powerful aromas of ink, dark black raspberry and a hint of mint.  On the palate it fills your mouth with deep dark fruit complicated by accents of earth, licorice, and chocolate.  The firm, powerful, finish makes it easy to see how this will develop over the next 10 years, but there’s no reason you can’t enjoy it now with grilled lamb!

Anton Bauer Blaufrankisch Reserve Wagram 2012 Product #31803 (In Stock)
Anton Bauer Blaufrankisch Reserve Wagram 2012 Anton Bauer Blaufrankisch Reserve Wagram 2012

Perhaps Austria's very best red grape, Blaufrankisch remains relatively unknown here in the USA.  This deep, rich, and spicy example from Anton Bauer could help fix that a bit.  It's a barrel selection made by importer Klaus Wittauer and Anton that Klaus liked so much he put one of his artist wife's paintings on the label.  20 months in oak plus extra time in bottle has done this nothing but good! Very plush and deep with a very long finish, the interplay of fruit, chocolate and exotic spice is utterly captivating.  A great example and highly rated by Austira's preeminent wine guide:

"Spicy black berry flavor, nuances of dark cherries, a touch of dried fruit and cardamom. Complex, dark berry fruit, prominent, well integrated tannins, ripe cherries, chocolate finish, good development potential, a fine food companion."  Falstaff 92 points

Begali Amarone Della Valpolicella Classico 2012 Product #30731 (In Stock)
Begali Amarone Della Valpolicella Classico 2012 Begali Amarone Della Valpolicella Classico 2012

As Wine Advocate said in late 2013, “If you can name but two producers in Valpolicella (I’m betting they are Dal Forno and Quintarelli), it’s now time to add a third: Lorenzo Begali.”  Begali’s Amarone isn’t quite as hefty as Dal Forno and is much cleaner and less rustic than Quintarelli, but we agree that the quality-levels are very similar – even if the prices are about 80% less!

Soaring aromas of dried black cherry, blueberry, and blackberry are framed by subtle notes of oak, tobacco and chocolate.  On the palate the wine is amazingly pure, clean, and fresh – even at 15.5% abv! – with layers and layers of rich fresh fruit, dried berry and raisin, crushed flower, dark chocolate, cured tobacco, and sweet spice.  Plenty of Amarone richness and power, for sure, but with impeccable balance and silkiness of texture and perfectly integrated alcohol.  The juicy, fruit and spice-filled finish sails on over ripe tannins with berry and raisin flavors lingering on and on.  Put some away to enjoy with warming winter meals but don’t hesitate to pop a bottle now to pair with ribs, brisket, or any other rich food off the grill.

Speri Amarone Della Valpolicella Sant' Urbano 2012 Product #31553 (In Stock)
Speri Amarone Della Valpolicella Sant' Urbano 2012 Speri Amarone Della Valpolicella Sant' Urbano 2012

"Dark ruby with a pale rim. Penetrating red cherry, cinnamon, minerals and botanical herbs on the perfumed, captivating nose; this has a strong aromatic quality that I rarely find in Amarone. Then slightly more austere in the mouth, with strong herbal elements adding a savory component to the ripe but vibrant red fruit flavors. Finishes long with a firm tannic spine, young, chewy tannins, and hints of gunflint. A knockout Amarone and one of the early candidates for wine of the vintage in the difficult 2012 vintage."  Vinous (d'Agata) 92 points

"This complex and fragrant wine opens with dried violet, black plum and cooking spice aromas. The smooth, well-structured palate doles out blackberry jam, pipe tobacco, ripe black cherry, nutmeg and licorice flavors. Velvety tannins provide elegant support. Drink through 2027."Wine Enthusiast 94 points
