De Angelis Falerio DOC Bianco 2015 Product #31078 (In Stock)
De Angelis Falerio DOC Bianco 2015 De Angelis Falerio DOC Bianco 2015

Best vintage yet for this fresh, fruit-filled, Italian white. The Falerio DOC sits at the southern end of Marche, on Italy's Adriatic coast just East of Umbria.  The relatively new DOC was created in 1975 to promote the region's two best white wine grapes-Passerina and Pecorino-while continuing to allow use of the ubiquitous Trebbiano.

Great aromas of pear, peach, and lime with a salty scent of the sea in the background.    On the palate, there's loads of ripe, creamy peach, apple, pear and nectarine fruit with a spritz of key lime juice and seltzer followed by a chalky, salty, mineral-driven, finish.  There's a lot of creamy richness here that will please fans of unoaked Chardonnays, but the zesty acidity and mineral element make this super fresh and mouthwatering.  Brilliant with a garlicky scampi and seafood but pretty darn fun to just drink at a party or with friends over antipasti.  Fantastic value.

Hillinger Small Hill Red 2015 Product #32332 (In Stock)
Hillinger Small Hill Red 2015 Hillinger Small Hill Red 2015

The kind of soft, supple, and oh-so-easy-to-drink red you'll want to have at hand all summer long!  A blend of 50% Merlot plus equal parts Pinot Noir and St. Laurent, this is bursting with aromas of dark cherry, black raspberry, and a dusty chocolate note.  In the mouth, the fruit gets a little tangier with boysenberry and cherry notes plus more bitter chocolate and just the right touch of oak spice.  Great energy and focus from start to finish with tangy blueberry and chocolate notes lingering.  Fun to just sip and a great match for grilled sausage, roast chicken, or burgers.

Kellerei Kaltern Caldaro Schiava 2015 Product #30795 (In Stock)
Kellerei Kaltern Caldaro Schiava 2015 Kellerei Kaltern Caldaro Schiava 2015

Schiava (also called Vernatsch or Trollinger) was actually the region’s most planted grape for many years – with 60% of total vineyard area – until Pinot Grigio and Chardonnay began to supplant it.  That’s too bad, because the light, crisp, and juicy red wines this local grape makes are fun to drink and pair well with a wide range of foods.

Reflecting the cultural and linguistic diversity of Alto Adige, the Schiava grape is called “Kalterersee” in the local dialect of the region around Lake Caldaro.  Grapes for this beauty grew on loamy, limestone gravel soils at 230-450 meters above the Lake and were fermented and aged entirely in tank. A delicious farmhouse red, loaded with red berry fruit, a hint of smoke, and a bright gentle finish.  Kind of like a ripe Chinon (but without the herbal notes), this is delicious with a light chill and shines with everyday foods and cured meats.  A tad more rich and round in the warm 2015 harvest, but still a refreshingly great value!

Palazzone Orvieto Classico Vignarco 2015 Product #31231 (In Stock)
Palazzone Orvieto Classico Vignarco 2015 Palazzone Orvieto Classico Vignarco 2015

We've featured Palazzone's other Orvietos before, but this year it was the Classico that really grabbed our attention.  It's a traditional blend of 50% Procanico, 30% Grechetto and dollops of Verdello, Drupeggio and Malvasia that comes together to deliver boatloads of classic Orvieto character.  What's that, you ask?  Try aromas and flavors of bright, fresh, sweet lemon juice with a twist of fennel frond and squeeze of honeysuckle.  Not a "light, crisp, neutral" Italian white, this sports big flavors and a rich, mouth-coating, texture and a long, mouthwatering, finish of lemon oil, honeysuckle, and mineral flavors lingering nicely.  There's enough body and interest and fruit to make this a joy to drink solo and it will sing with salads, seafood, and cheese.  A winning value that outperforms many wines at 2x the price.

Branger Muscadet Les Fils De Gras Mouton 2015 Product #32444 (In Stock)
Branger Muscadet Les Fils De Gras Mouton 2015 Branger Muscadet Les Fils De Gras Mouton 2015

The world's most under-valued great white wine could just be Muscadet - the bone-dry, stony, green-fruited Loire Valley white that folks keep confusing with sweet/perfumy "Muscat."  The grape is actually Melon de Bourgogne and it gives a tart, green apple and lime zest, wine that needs a few months resting on the lees to develop matching richness and depth.  This one's delicious for now-2025 (really!) and crazy cheap for the quality.

"Last tasted in late July 2016 on the eve of what was to be the first of multiple bottlings, this is a bit closed on the nose but displays infectious juiciness of apple, lime and honeydew melon mingled with iodine, crushed stone and mineral salts, leading to a vibrant, consummately refreshing, palate-staining finish."  Vinous (Schlidnecht) 92-93 points

Even bigger, bolder, more fruit filled, and even more delicious than before.  From vineyards around Rome, the Volpetti packs a punch of lush dark damson plum and black cherry fruit with accents of earth and spice.  A short stay in old oak barrels softens the tannins and adds a hint of sweet balsamic.  Drink this a touch cool with pizza margherita, a bowl of pasta in red sauce, or even a big, juicy, burger and you'll be very, very, happy!

La Mondianese Grignolino d' Asti 2015 Product #31635 (In Stock)
La Mondianese Grignolino d' Asti 2015 La Mondianese Grignolino d' Asti 2015

What is Grignolino?  A red wine grape from Piemonte, Italy, where the root name – grignole – means “many pips”, referring to the many seeds found in this rarely seen grape.  It’s prone to being tough and tannic, but not here.  Diane thought this tasted like “Pinot Noir and Sangiovese had a baby”, and there's definitely something to that.  In any event, it’s a lightly colored and textured wine that opens with aromas of sweet cherry, red berries, and a hint of lavender.  In the mouth the fruit is bright and juicy and a touch of earthiness comes up at the end.  Light enough to drink with fish or to take a chill for solo sipping.

Clua Mas d'En Pol Blanca 2016 Product #32121 (In Stock)
Clua Mas d'En Pol Blanca 2016 Clua Mas d'En Pol Blanca 2016

Xavier Clua crafts this vivid white from Grenache Blanc, Chardonnay and a dash of Sauvignon Blanc grown in the rocky, hard-to-work, vineyards of Terra Alta.  Fermented cool in tank and bottled without ever touching a barrel, it delivers just the right balance of luscious nectarine and tangy pineapple fruit with hints of lemon grass and lime pith.  Round, generous, and mouthfilling, the real excitement here is on the back palate and finish where a burst of selzer, chalk, and briny mineral emerges under the mouthwatering acidity.  A refreshing white you’ll love sipping on the back deck with nibbles and enjoy even more with shellfish, sausage, or paella.  Just a winner all around.

Di Lenardo Ronco Nole 2015 Product #32302 (In Stock)
Di Lenardo Ronco Nole 2015 Di Lenardo Ronco Nole 2015

The name of this Italian red blend is a joke - many wineries in the relatively flat Friuli region like to claim their wine is from this hill ("Ronco") or that.  "No Hill" is Max di Lenardo's blend of 50% Merlot, 25% Cabernet and 25% Refosco from the Friuli plains aged in American oak.  It's a spicy, peppery, wine with rich dark fruit and accents of vanilla and mocha.  Fresh enough to serve solo and even better with something grilled.

Eric Chevalier Muscadet Clos De La Butte 2015 Product #31733 (In Stock)
Eric Chevalier Muscadet Clos De La Butte 2015 Eric Chevalier Muscadet Clos De La Butte 2015

Want to taste what a talented young winemaker can do with 50 year-old Melon de Bourgogne on the stony soils of Muscadet, not far from the Atlantic Ocean in western France?  Well, you should!  Because this is about as delicious as Muscadet gets.  Vibrand aromas of stone and citrus fruit with something salty in the back lead to a big mouthfull of tangy fruit, salty stone, and the richness that comes with 8 months on the fine lees stirred every day.  For shellfish, of course, but also just to drink.

Centonze Zibibbo 2015 Product #32539 (In Stock)
Centonze Zibibbo 2015 Centonze Zibibbo 2015

Zibibbo - fun to say, fun to drink!  It's a parent of Muscat and one of the oldest genetically unmodified vines still in existence. In Sicily's warm vineyards it creates a wonderfully aromatic, refreshing, and dry wine that you'll love for sipping and serving at table.

"Delicate nuances of camphor and mint complicate peach tea aromas. Rich and dense, offering precise flavors of lime, green fig and sage, nicely framed by zingy acidity. Finishes peppery and long, and incredibly saline; this is almost salty."  Vinous (d'Agata) 90 points

Ameztoi Getariako Txakolina White 2015 Product #31021 (In Stock)

With 8 straight 91 point ratings from Vinous, it seems likely the new release is a winner, too!  Vibrant aromas of lime zest, Granny Smith, white flower and chalk lead to zesty flavors of citrus, apricot, passion fruit, and salty mineral that get more powerful with air (and as the light prickle of CO2 blows off).  A tarragon note emerges on the bone dry, energetic finish.  Great choice for shellfish and summer.

Statti Gaglioppo Calabria 2015 Product #31874 (In Stock)
Statti Gaglioppo Calabria 2015 Statti Gaglioppo Calabria 2015

A touch richer and deeper in 2015, but still about as much fun as you can find under cork. A light chill is best for this rich but refreshing red.

"Earthy and autumnal tones rise to the top of the 2015 Gaglioppo. This is a raw and rustic wine that marches to the beat of its own drum. Its personality and genuine character are very reflective of what Gaglioppo typically offers. Dark fruit and dried cherry are followed by olive, tar and forest bramble. This an easy-drinking red for near-term consumption."Wine Advocate 88 points

En Numeros Vermells Priorat AiAiAi 2015 Product #31540 (In Stock)
En Numeros Vermells Priorat AiAiAi 2015 En Numeros Vermells Priorat AiAiAi 2015

“AiAiAi” is the kind of thing you say with a smile when something surprising happens, and tasting Silvia Puig’s 2015 “baby” Priorat and then seeing the very reasonable price certainly qualifies!  Tiny production – just 3,216 bottles in 2015.

I don’t think I can improve upon my note from our first taste of 2015 AiAiAi:  “Even though it's dead young, the nose is already giving with bold aromas of roasted red berries - raspberry, strawberry - dark red flowers and a big dose of Priorat's signature warm slate.  The flavors are classic Priorat, too - actually, classic $50-$70 Priorat.  Super rich roasted red fruit, sweet spice, a hint of vanilla bean, and a bit of cracked pepper with a texture that enters pure and precise, expands to fully coat the inside of your mouth and then draws back into clear focus with delicious, ripe, chewy, tannins.  Finish goes on with raspberry jam, slate, and more lingering.  Not a trace of heat.  What a delicious wine!”

Amalie Robert Pinot Meunier 2015 Product #32607 (In Stock)
Amalie Robert Pinot Meunier 2015 Amalie Robert Pinot Meunier 2015

A "failed" experiment (well, "abandoned," anyway) with sparkling wine left Ernie Pink and Dena Drews with a few acres of Pinot Meunier that's just too good to abandon.  So they make this delicious red from it - based on the huge 92 point rating for the 2014, it's one of the finest still red Pinot Meuniers in the world!

The 2015 picks up where that stunner left off. This is a pretty wine in the glass, with a translucent red brick color you can easily see through.  Inviting aromas of red cherry, sweet strawberry, and candied rose petal pull you in to ripe, vibrant, flavors of bitter cherry, crushed raspberry, and a beguiling floral/anise note on the finish.  Nice tension between the sweet fruit and tart acids and just enough fine tannin to make this easy to enjoy with all kinds of food.

En Numeros Vermells Garnaxta Blanca 2015 Product #30988 (In Stock)
En Numeros Vermells Garnaxta Blanca 2015 En Numeros Vermells Garnaxta Blanca 2015

Silvia Puig's 2015 Garnaxta Blanca starts with very old bush-trained vines growing on small terraces running up and down Priorat’s jumbled hills.  The vines poke out of a cover of broken red and brown slate with flecks of mica called “llicorella” that gives the fruit an almost salty, minerally, feel.  Hot, sunny, days drive ripening while cool, clear, nights maintain freshness.  Fermentation and aging in large French oak casks adds roundness while time in clay amphora gives a portion of the wine a rich, exotic, feel.

The 2015 is very young right now and while it’s already delicious, I think it will be better still this Fall and through 2020+.  Big aromas of green pineapple, apricot, fresh peach, fennel frond and salty stone carry on through a luxuriously textured, mouth-coating, palate.  Notes of spice, orange blossom, and anise emerge for even more complexity as the wine sits in your mouth – and it does sit there for a while as this beauty shows unbelievable palate and finishing length.  A burst of fruity acidity and loads of salty stone minerality bring freshness at the end.  To call it “the best White Grenache in the world” is actually faint praise:  this is a great, great, wine that delivers deep and profound satisfaction.

Dow Quinta De Senhora Da Ribeira Port Vintage 2015 Product #32409 (In Stock)
Dow Quinta De Senhora Da Ribeira Port Vintage 2015 Dow Quinta De Senhora Da Ribeira Port Vintage 2015

In "declared" vintages, Dow's makes it's vintage ports from fruit grown across it's Port holdings, but two great vineyards - Bomfin and Senhora da Ribeira - always comprise the wine's core.  In great years when no Vintage is declared, you get the chance to taste vintage Ports made just from these sites - in this case, the "single quinta" Port of Senhora da Ribeira.

Like most Port houses, Dow's came within a whisker of declaring 2015, deciding to hold off only when the massive quality of 2016 became apparent (Port houses generally declare only 3-4 vintages per decade and almost never two in a row).  You'll certainly taste why 2015 was so compelling here in this wine from the remote, hot, Douro Superior.  Delicious now and with 40+ years of life to come.

"The 2015 Quinta de Senhora da Ribeira, the Douro Superior quinta, is a blend of Touriga Franca 55%, Touriga Nacional 35% and Sousão 10%. It comes in at 98 grams per liter of residual sugar. This is a relatively big boy on first taste, showing good structure and a mouth-coating demeanor. The delicious flavors, laced with cherry-chocolate and some mint, make it enticing, not just well structured. This is a lovely single-quinta that should age pretty well and still be approachable young. 700 cases produced."Wine Advocate 93 points

"Rich and fruity, this wine is packed with intense black-currant flavors. It is perfumed, ripe with a good tannic background. The density of the wine and the firm structure point to a long aging process. Drink this beautifully structured wine from 2026."Wine Enthusiast 93 points
