Monte Degli Angeli Pinot Noir Monferrato 2016 Product #32690 (In Stock)
Monte Degli Angeli Pinot Noir Monferrato 2016 Monte Degli Angeli Pinot Noir Monferrato 2016

You've got to be willing to think a bit outside the box to find real, honest, Pinot Noir selling for less than $10 these days.  Here we head to Italy's Piemonte region - more famous for Barolo and Barbaresco - to a small family-owned estate run by Brothers Antonio and Paolo Sperone.  The climate here is closer to Burgundy than you'd expect, and it lets the Sperones harvest ripe, juicy, Pinot Noir fruit and then give it 6 months in barrel to soften and gain complexity.  Black cherry and strawberry fruit hold center stage here with accents of smoke and fresh earth.  Juicy in the middle and supported by light, fine, tannin, this is a steal in value Pinot Noir that tastes like...well, Pinot Noir!

Gently sparkling with fine fruit: that's the Hillinger Secco, the winery's light pink creation of 100% Pinot Noir grapes. This is easily the best (and most dry) release yet. Pretty in the glass and loaded with aromas and flavors of tangy strawberry, cranberry and cherry fruit.  Juicy and refreshingly dry on the tangy finish, this would be a great brunch or warm afternoon drink!

Jackhammer Pinot Noir Monterey County 2015 Product #32306 (In Stock)
Jackhammer Pinot Noir Monterey County 2015 Jackhammer Pinot Noir Monterey County 2015

Check out the back label here - the argument is that a hammer is the right tool for ANY job and that this wine is pretty much the perfect choice for any occasion.  Not sure about the hammer, but we're all-in on the wine!  This is 100% Pinot Noir from Monterey, on California's Central Coast, and the outstanding (for Pinot) 2015 vintage. Perfectly ripe at a very Pinot-like 13.5%, with a just right touch of wood influence and a great, everyday, price, this is built to bring down the house!

Big, fresh, aromas of cherry, plum, cola and a touch of smoke lead to a fresh, sweetly fruited, palate of crushed cherries/berries, spice and earth.  Deliciously unsubtle, it delivers bold flavors without any excess weight and a clean, mouthwatering, finish that will pull your back for more.  Tasting more like $25 than $15, this is a terrific weeknight or party Pinot for this year and next.

Heron Pinot Noir California 2015 Heron Pinot Noir California 2015

Here's a delicious party Pinot Noir that well out-performs the modest price.  Ripe Pinot fruit from Paso Robles, Monterey and the Russian River Valley gets a cool fermentation and then aging in 1 and 2 year-old French oak.  That brings out a lovely richness and very RRV-like candied cherry fruit with accents of cola, spice and pepper.  Nice and round on the palate, there's enough structure here for this to shine with salmon and poultry.

This has been one of Robert Parker's favorite "value" Pinot Noirs over the past few years; as he said of the 2013, "An authentic tasting Pinot Noir that sells for a song...Aromas of sweet red and black cherry fruit intermixed with clove and baking spices are offered in a medium-bodied, earthy, soft, silky style." Another solid release in the small 2016 vintage and still a great deal. Fun stuff.

Anton Bauer Pinot Noir Wagram 2015 Product #31942 (In Stock)
Anton Bauer Pinot Noir Wagram 2015 Anton Bauer Pinot Noir Wagram 2015

This is 100% Pinot Noir grown on chalky loess soils warmed by hot winds blowing west from the Pannonian plain and cooled by chilly eastern nighttime breezes from the Alps.  Picked perfectly ripe at a very reasonable 13% alcohol, Tony gently extracts color and flavor during a slow fermentation and then softens and spices the wine with 16 months aging in used oak cask and barrique.

In 2015, Tony’s “basic” Pinot Noir manages something that Pinot does better than any other grape – to marry deep, rich, lush fruit with a silky texture and lovely vibrancy.  It serves up big aromas of spiced raspberry and black cherry with a lovely earthy bass note.  In the mouth it’s not at all heavy or thick, but loaded with intense flavors of crushed raspberry and cherry, Asian spice, smoke, and a hint of herb.  Silky smooth in texture, a just right burst of fresh raspberry acids give lift on the long, lightly tannic, finish.  A Pinot for fans of the best of Oregon, the Sonoma Coast, and Burgundy’s Cote de Beaune. Probably the finest Pinot Noir value in the store...Ever.  Astonishing.

Brandborg Pinot Noir Bench Lands Oregon 2014 Product #32693 (In Stock)
Brandborg Pinot Noir Bench Lands Oregon 2014 Brandborg Pinot Noir Bench Lands Oregon 2014

How to get a great value in delicious, Thanksgiving-ready, Pinot Noir?  Start by going beyond Sonoma and the Willamette Valley to an under-the-radar region like Oregon’s Umpqua Valley.  Then add a no-flash, no-fuss, winemaking family like Terry and Sue Brandborg.  Last, stir in a dash of a great vintage like 2014 when these sunny by cool vineyards achieved lovely ripeness without any heaviness or excess alcohol.

That brings you to the 2014 Brandborg Pinot Noir Benchlands from 1,500 foot elevation vineyards in the Umpqua Valley (where Pinot was planted years before it ever reached  the Willamette Valley to the north!).  Light in color but long on flavor and fragrance, starting with bold aromas of ripe red cherry, blueberry, red plum and wild flowers.  On the palate it's light and fresh in texture and bursting with crushed red cherry, raspberry, and orange pith flavors with pretty shadings of coffee and mocha from aging in 20% new French oak.  Turns a little savory on the finish, making this a pretty perfect match for sage-laced stuffing - or just casual sipping before, during and after the big meal!  A best-in-the-USA price makes a great wine even sweeter!

Frecciarossa Pinot Nero Sillery (White Pinot Noir) 2016 Product #32439 (In Stock)
Frecciarossa Pinot Nero Sillery (White Pinot Noir) 2016 Frecciarossa Pinot Nero Sillery (White Pinot Noir) 2016

Sure, we admit it - this caught our attention because it's a rare white wine made from black-skinned Pinot Noir and "Pinot Nero Bianco" is fun to say.  And because it's from Oltrepo Pavese, a stunning slice of Lombardy south of Milan famous for rich wines in Roman times and known as Italy's top Pinot Noir region today.

It landed on our shelves because it's drop dead gorgeous!  Aromas and flavors of white peach, crushed strawberry, Rainer cherry and fresh herb are inviting and complex, and the rich, polished, texture and long finish are deeply satisfying.  A great wine for rich seafood dishes (think scallop risotto) or sophisticated sipping.  A bit of a rarity that may be gone too soon - grab it now while you can.

Kellerei Kaltern Pinot Noir Saltner Alto Adige 2015 Product #32268 (In Stock)
Kellerei Kaltern Pinot Noir Saltner Alto Adige 2015 Kellerei Kaltern Pinot Noir Saltner Alto Adige 2015

We found lots to love when visiting the winery in Alto Adige, with this Pinot Noir one of the stars of the tasting.  It’s 100% Pinot grown mainly at about 400 meters altitude around Lake Kaltern and in nearby villages.  As the grapes come into the modern winery, they are destemmed, crushed, and allowed to ferment slowly in open wood vats before going into a mixture of large and small used French oak casks for 12 months off aging.

Words like “beautiful” and “lovely” keep coming to mind here.  The wine’s a stunning transparent garnet color in the glass and the aromas are redolent of just picked strawberry, right-off-the-tree red cherry, and mountain flowers with just a hint of wood spice and smoke.  The texture is silky and luscious, delivering mouthfilling flavors of strawberry pie and sweet cherry with accents of berry blossom, spice and smoke.  At just 13% alcohol, it’s certainly not heavy, but the flavors really coat your mouth with sweet richness before finishing crisp, clean, and fresh with a touch of spice and mouthwatering cranberry at the end.  With a light chill, this is the perfect summer red for salmon, salami, fried chicken (hot or cold!), or just toasting the sunset.

Girardin Bourgogne Rouge Cuvee Saint-Vincent 2014 Product #32619 (In Stock)
Girardin Bourgogne Rouge Cuvee Saint-Vincent 2014 Girardin Bourgogne Rouge Cuvee Saint-Vincent 2014

The care, effort and expense that Domaine Vincent Girardin invested in this beautiful Bourgogne Rouge certainly could command a much higher price. 40+ year-old vines, biodynamic farming, extensive handwork in the vineyard, and triple sorting to ensure only the best fruit makes it into the fermenter are all standard here. After a 3 week fermentation and maceration, the wine aged for 10 months in 500 liter French oak barrels.  Larger barrels and just 10% new wood allowed the wine to soften and gain layers of depth and complexity without compromising the pure, lovely, fruit that makes the best 2011 red Burgundies so irresistible.

Even at this young age, you'll already find a sweet and savory perfume of red berries, fresh earth, and dried tobacco wafting from your glass. The palate is richly textured, vibrant, and very pure with generous flavors of dark cherry, black raspberry, walnut, coffee, and a touch of earth. The complex flavors continue on the long finish where supple tannins provide support and the black fruit, coffee, and tobacco notes linger.  Absolutely delicious right now, but sure to keep improving over the next five years or so.

Dom Deliance Givry 1er Cru Les Combes 2015 Product #32010 (In Stock)

From an estate established in 1935 that made first red and white still wines, then sparkling Cremant, and now - with the new generation - is moving back to still wine production.  And very good still wine it is, especially in the brilliant 2015 vintage.

For less than a decent Bourgogne Rouge, here you're able to enjoy true 1er Cru quality from a stony vineyard in Givry, one of the five villages of the Côte Chalonnaise. In this ripe vintage, the wine serves up complex aromas of Bing cherry, ripe raspberry, wet earth, licorice and wood fire.  The texture is round and pure with generous dark cherry/berry fruit and a pretty accent of baking spice.  Rich, but still nicely precise, it's drinking well now and will shine through 2022 and beyond.  Stellar value.

La Follette Pinot Noir North Coast 2014 Product #32455 (In Stock)
La Follette Pinot Noir North Coast 2014 La Follette Pinot Noir North Coast 2014

As Wine Advocate said a few years ago, "Greg La Follette was one of the pioneers of the Sonoma Coast and he deserves enormous credit for sourcing potentially brilliant vineyard sites throughout the area." This exciting Sonoma Coast Pinot packs the punch of aroma and flavor you'd hope for in a wine twice it's price.  A stellar value.

"The 2014 Pinot Noir (North Coast) is bright, precise and beautifully delineated throughout. Freshly cut flowers, sweet red berries, mint and crushed rocks are some of the many notes that open up in this super-attractive, mid-weight Pinot from Greg LaFollette."  Vinous (Galloni) 91 points

Arterberry Maresh Pinot Noir Dundee Hills 2015 Product #32437 (In Stock)
Arterberry Maresh Pinot Noir Dundee Hills 2015 Arterberry Maresh Pinot Noir Dundee Hills 2015

Jim Maresh’s focus is on single vineyard Pinot Noir, so in most years, he sells off any barrels or lots that don’t make it into the final single vineyard cuvee.  In excellent years, though, that wine is just too good to part with, so he supplements it with fruit from neighbors and bottles this wine:  the Dundee Hills cuvee.  The 2014 was the first release of the Dundee Hills bottling in a few years.  It was a fine, 90-point, gem that Wine Advocate called “probably the bargain of the vintage."  The 2015 is better.

Oregon’s 2015 vintage looked and felt a lot like 2014 – warm weather, big harvest, bold fruit.  The difference is that the 2015s have better structure and style, both of which are on display here.  You’ll find ripe, dark red, fruit on the nose here with accents of blood orange and subtle smoke.  Wonderfully generous and vivid in the mouth, the dark cherry and plum fruit expands and coats your palate before savory notes of licorice and mushroom come in on the back.  The flavors linger nicely over fine, silky smooth, tannins that promise delight with food and 7-10 years improvement in cellar.  Terrific, delicious, stuff.

Patricia Green Pinot Noir Reserve 2015 Product #31758 (In Stock)
Patricia Green Pinot Noir Reserve 2015 Patricia Green Pinot Noir Reserve 2015

This has been one of the best values in Willamette Valley Pinot Noir for years, but in 2015 it really soars.  This year 75% of the barrels came from sedimentary soils in Ribbon Ridge and Chehalem Mountain AVAs, 15% from Freedom Hill and 15% from volcanic soils in the Dundee Hills.  It’s genuinely lush and a bit showy now with opulent aromas and flavors of crushed black raspberry, dark cherries, exotic flowers, smoke and damp earth.  Mouthfilling and showing a glyceryl richness, but with vivid acids, fine tannins, and no excess of weight.  As Jim and Patty say, “There are seriously great bones here and this wine will stand up to many, many much higher priced bottlings… In short, this wine is a smoking deal!!

"Deep red. Expansive red berry and floral pastille scents and flavors show impressive energy and pick up a hint of smokiness as the wine opens up. Smooth and fleshy but lively as well; a late jolt of white pepper adds spicy bite. Generous but vibrant in character, finishing very long and sweet, with gentle tannins lending shape and subtle grip. This wine delivers exceptional bang for the buck."  Vinous (Raynolds) 91 points
