Monte Degli Angeli Pinot Noir Monferrato 2016 Product #32690 (In Stock)
Monte Degli Angeli Pinot Noir Monferrato 2016 Monte Degli Angeli Pinot Noir Monferrato 2016

You've got to be willing to think a bit outside the box to find real, honest, Pinot Noir selling for less than $10 these days.  Here we head to Italy's Piemonte region - more famous for Barolo and Barbaresco - to a small family-owned estate run by Brothers Antonio and Paolo Sperone.  The climate here is closer to Burgundy than you'd expect, and it lets the Sperones harvest ripe, juicy, Pinot Noir fruit and then give it 6 months in barrel to soften and gain complexity.  Black cherry and strawberry fruit hold center stage here with accents of smoke and fresh earth.  Juicy in the middle and supported by light, fine, tannin, this is a steal in value Pinot Noir that tastes like...well, Pinot Noir!

Jackhammer Pinot Noir Monterey County 2015 Product #32306 (In Stock)
Jackhammer Pinot Noir Monterey County 2015 Jackhammer Pinot Noir Monterey County 2015

Check out the back label here - the argument is that a hammer is the right tool for ANY job and that this wine is pretty much the perfect choice for any occasion.  Not sure about the hammer, but we're all-in on the wine!  This is 100% Pinot Noir from Monterey, on California's Central Coast, and the outstanding (for Pinot) 2015 vintage. Perfectly ripe at a very Pinot-like 13.5%, with a just right touch of wood influence and a great, everyday, price, this is built to bring down the house!

Big, fresh, aromas of cherry, plum, cola and a touch of smoke lead to a fresh, sweetly fruited, palate of crushed cherries/berries, spice and earth.  Deliciously unsubtle, it delivers bold flavors without any excess weight and a clean, mouthwatering, finish that will pull your back for more.  Tasting more like $25 than $15, this is a terrific weeknight or party Pinot for this year and next.

This has been one of Robert Parker's favorite "value" Pinot Noirs over the past few years; as he said of the 2013, "An authentic tasting Pinot Noir that sells for a song...Aromas of sweet red and black cherry fruit intermixed with clove and baking spices are offered in a medium-bodied, earthy, soft, silky style." Another solid release in the small 2016 vintage and still a great deal. Fun stuff.

Heron Pinot Noir California 2016 Product #32968 (In Stock)
Heron Pinot Noir California 2016 Heron Pinot Noir California 2016

Here's a delicious party Pinot Noir that well out-performs the modest price.  Ripe Pinot fruit from Paso Robles, Monterey and the Russian River Valley gets a cool fermentation and then aging in 1 and 2 year-old French oak.  That brings out a lovely richness and very RRV-like candied cherry fruit with accents of cola, spice and pepper.  Nice and round on the palate, there's enough structure here for this to shine with salmon and poultry.

Love big, bold, "Power Pinot" like Belle Glos or Meiomi?  Then this is going to delight you at a very compelling price.  100% Pinot Noir with a dense, rich, nearly thick, texture.  No hard edges to the plush black raspberry and dark cherry fruit or the velvety smooth tannins.  There's a nice smoky note for interest and plenty of spice.  A fun sipper and fine with salmon, too!

A nicely mellow and smooth Pinot.

"Pale to medium ruby-purple in color, the 2015 Pinot Noir offers up notes of black cherries and black raspberries with touches of chocolate box, dried herbs and cinnamon stick. Medium-bodied, the palate features a well-played texture of grainy tannins and just enough freshness to lift the black cherry-led flavors, finishing with a pleasant earthiness."Wine Advocate 89 points

Here’s a steal of a red Burgundy for everyday pleasure from a small producer located in Chitry, right on the border of Chablis. It's all about freshness and vibrancy, starting with a gloriously transparent cranberry and ruby hue. Then fleshy tart raspberry and red cherry fruit with a handful of crushed flowers, some red licorice and a dash of graphite come together to create aromas and flavors that make you smile. Try it with a chill on the picnic table or blanket or just pop, pour, and be ready to pout when the bottle's empty.

A sneaky value here - if these grapes grew on the other side of a 7 foot wide fire road, they'd be Santa Lucia Highlands fruit and the wine price might easily jump $10.  It sure tastes like a $35 wine with dark, fleshy, cherry and black raspberry fruit and layers of smoke, coffee and mocha from the middle through the plush and deep finish.  A touch of spice comes up with air as the wine just gets more interesting and smooth.

Patricia Green Pinot Noir Reserve 2016 Product #33147 (In Stock)
Patricia Green Pinot Noir Reserve 2016 Patricia Green Pinot Noir Reserve 2016

Note that this is already SOLD OUT at the winery and won't last long here. This has been one of the best values in Willamette Valley Pinot Noir for years, but in 2016 it really soars. It's a blend of more forward barrels from vineyards in Ribbon Ridge, the Chehalem Mountains, the Dundee Hills and Freedom Hill. It's ready right now and will age much longer than you'd expect from a wine at this price point.  As Jim wrote about the 2015, “There are seriously great bones here and this wine will stand up to many, many much higher priced bottlings… In short, this wine is a smoking deal!!

“Spice-tinged raspberry and cherry aromas are complicated by cola, floral and smoky mineral notes. Sweet and focused on the palate, offering energetic red berry flavors and suggestions of rose pastille and blood orange that build with air. Vibrant and precise in style, delivering solid finishing cut, interwoven tannins and impressive, spicy persistence.”  Vinous (Raynolds) 91 points

A Kermit Lynch Burgundy is going to be natural, pure and compelling - which is what we have here. From 45 year-old vines growing inside the Dijon city limits, this is very Cote de Nuits with pretty red griotte cherry fruit, a touch of earth and blossom, and sneaky length on the palate and the lightly tannic finish.  Very pure and delicious with structure perfect for duck or pate.

Arterberry Maresh Pinot Noir Dundee Hills 2015 Product #32437 (In Stock)
Arterberry Maresh Pinot Noir Dundee Hills 2015 Arterberry Maresh Pinot Noir Dundee Hills 2015

Jim Maresh’s focus is on single vineyard Pinot Noir, so in most years, he sells off any barrels or lots that don’t make it into the final single vineyard cuvee.  In excellent years, though, that wine is just too good to part with, so he supplements it with fruit from neighbors and bottles this wine:  the Dundee Hills cuvee.  The 2014 was the first release of the Dundee Hills bottling in a few years.  It was a fine, 90-point, gem that Wine Advocate called “probably the bargain of the vintage."  The 2015 is better.

Oregon’s 2015 vintage looked and felt a lot like 2014 – warm weather, big harvest, bold fruit.  The difference is that the 2015s have better structure and style, both of which are on display here.  You’ll find ripe, dark red, fruit on the nose here with accents of blood orange and subtle smoke.  Wonderfully generous and vivid in the mouth, the dark cherry and plum fruit expands and coats your palate before savory notes of licorice and mushroom come in on the back.  The flavors linger nicely over fine, silky smooth, tannins that promise delight with food and 7-10 years improvement in cellar.  Terrific, delicious, stuff.

"Highly perfumed red berry preserve, Asian spice and rose oil aromas are lent vivacity by a smoky mineral nuance. Silky, expansive raspberry, bitter cherry and spicecake flavors show very good energy and pick up a smoky flourish with aeration. Finishes juicy, gently sweet and quite long, featuring lingering red fruit flavors and discreet tannins."  Vinous (Raynolds) 91 points

Young Cody Wright is rapidly building a reputation to rival dad Ken's when it comes to rich Willamette Valley Pinot Noir.  This bottling blends fruit from six vineyards across 5 AVAs, all aged in 25% new French oak. And, it showcases the charms of the very precocious 2016 vintage.  Black cherry and raspberry fruit gain complexity from dashes of cardamom, red licorice, and caramel.  A silky, spicy, texture adds to the charm in a wine that finishes long and delicious.

Dom Mongeard Mugneret Bourgogne Rouge 2015 Dom Mongeard Mugneret Bourgogne Rouge 2015

Burgundy's 2015 vintage gave us silky, supple, reds with an extra jolt or rich, ripe, fruit and plenty of classic Burgundy terroir.  Here's a great example from 4.5 acres mainly in and near Vosne-Romanee. Ripe, hand-harvested, fruit is 100% destemmed, fermented in tank and then aged in twice-used French oak.  There's a very pretty perfume of ripe red cherry, raspberry, violets and a hint of something earthy - or "animal" as the winemaker says.  On the palate it's very pure and fresh and transparent with a silky feel to the generous cherry/raspberry fruit.  Stony minerality and fine tannins provide support to this very pretty, very delicious, Pinot Noir.  Drink now - 2020 or so.

Walter Scott Pinot Noir La Combe Verte 2016 Product #32997 (In Stock)
Walter Scott Pinot Noir La Combe Verte 2016 Walter Scott Pinot Noir La Combe Verte 2016

Pretty stupid good, the kind of Pinot that draws you in and then leaves you hearing yourself saying, “Wow!”  It’s mostly Eola Hills fruit with a few barrels of wine from Freedom Hill and a Dundee Hills site for depth and heft.  About 15% whole cluster fermentation adds spice and 30% new French oak gives extra smoky complexity and a soft, supple, mouthfeel.  There’s plenty of fruit here – you don’t have to work to “get” it – but also real complexity and potential to improve further still over the next 5 or so years.

“Spice-accented dark berries, cherry cola, Indian spices and woodsmoke on the nose, along with a subtle floral nuance. Shapely and supple on the palate, offering concentrated black raspberry, spicecake and rose pastille flavors and a sweetening mocha note. Finishes smoky and pliant, featuring gentle, slowly-mounting tannins and a strong echo of juicy dark fruit.”  Vinous (Raynolds) 91 points

"“Zesty and savory, with lively, smoky cherry aromas and layered raspberry, white pepper and orange peel flavors that linger toward refined tannins. Drink now through 2024. 1,250 cases made.”Wine Spectator 91 points

Lovely depth and earthy complexity here in a wine that will shine with earthy mushrooms, salmon and even lamb.

"This is brooding on the nose with the allure of an elderberry aroma. The same note dominates the palate which has a smooth, sensuous body, still held tight by brisk, fine tannin and lively acidity. There is almost stealthy, surprising grip. With its ample fruit this is already enticing, but structure and freshness promise more pleasure to come."Wine Enthusiast 92 points

St Innocent Pinot Noir Willamette Villages Cuvee 2016 Product #33263 (In Stock)
St Innocent Pinot Noir Willamette Villages Cuvee 2016 St Innocent Pinot Noir Willamette Villages Cuvee 2016

Always one of the greatest values in Willamette Valley Pinot Noir, the 2016 is another home run. It's mainly from the fine Vitae Springs Vineyard this year with dashes of fruit from other top vineyard sites.  A warm fermentation and gentle pump-overs extract richness and give the wine a velvet feel.  A year in mostly used oak rounds off the edges and adds just a touch of subtle spice.  A lovely example of marine sedimentary Pinot.

"Spice-accented raspberry, cherry and rose scents show a hint of underbrush in the background. Juicy and light on its feet, offering lively red berry and spicecake flavors that put on weight as the wine opens up. Fine-grained tannins sneak in late on the long, smooth finish, which leaves behind a jammy red fruit liqueur note."  Vinous (Raynolds) 90 points
