Clairon Des Anges Costieres De Nimes Rouge 2015 Product #32704 (In Stock)
Clairon Des Anges Costieres De Nimes Rouge 2015 Clairon Des Anges Costieres De Nimes Rouge 2015

The kind of wine Languedoc does best - a great all-purpose, no oak, quaffer made from 60% Grenache (for ripe red fruit) and 40% Syrah (for meaty, smoky, accents). Dark red raspberry fruit holds center stage with hints of blackberry and savory notes of pepper and black olive for interest.  Juicy and easy drinking with a fun, mouthwatering, finish.  Tastes like $15 - and a good $15 red at that!

Moulin De Gassac Guilhem Rose 2017 Product #33021 (In Stock)
Moulin De Gassac Guilhem Rose 2017 Moulin De Gassac Guilhem Rose 2017

2017 brings a nice update to the label for Moulin de Gassac Guilhem Rose and a bit of an upgrade to what is already one of our most popular pinks.  Nothing's changed about the wine growing or making. It’s equal parts Syrah and Carignan, grown and harvested fresh just for rosé.  After a few hours of fermentation, the juice is pressed off the black grape skins, giving it a just-right amount of color and structure while allowing the juice to retain all of its natural freshness and vibrancy.

The wine's a beautifully transparent salmon pink that sparkles in sunshine.  Aromas of fresh picked strawberries and crushed red fruits – raspberries and cherries – get a lift from floral accents and a hint of citrus rind.  In the mouth, it’s bright and crisp but also fleshy and rich, with loads of ripe berry fruit and just a touch of mineral. It fills your mouth with flavor and fun before the acids come up on the finish and make your mouth water, leaving you looking for a little bite to eat or another refreshing sip. “Berry” delicious!

Castelmaure Corbieres Col Des Vents 2016 Product #33156 (In Stock)
Castelmaure Corbieres Col Des Vents 2016 Castelmaure Corbieres Col Des Vents 2016

There’s nothing not to like and everything to love about this robust blend of 50% Carignan, 35% Grenache, and 15% Syrah from the barren hills of Languedoc’s Corbieres region.  Generous aromas of crushed blackberry, black plum, cracked pepper, cocoa, warm stones and more jump from the glass.  Take a sip and you’ll love how the briary blackberry, blueberry and raspberry fruit coat your mouth and the accents of chocolate, stone, herb and pepper give extra complexity.  While the flavors are big and the texture rich, there’s a welcome dose of juicy acidity and fine-grained tannins that make this refreshing drunk solo and flexible at table, too.

Ch La Pujade Corbieres Le Petit Spencer 2015 Product #31661 (In Stock)
Ch La Pujade Corbieres Le Petit Spencer 2015 Ch La Pujade Corbieres Le Petit Spencer 2015

"The Little Spencer" is the "fun" wine from this respected Corbieres estate in the heart of sunny Languedoc.  It's a blend of 50% Carignan plus 20% Mourvedre and 15% each Syrah and Grenache, all grown in a natural amphitheater that gives and extra dose of ripeness. This tastes and feels like a more expensive wine with deep, rich, blue/black fruit, complex accents of hot stone, licorice, and garrigue and a nicely chewy finish.  Fun stuff especially with rustic, herb-laced, foods.

Here's a delicious white Rhone from a biodynamic working in a great, great, vintage. A blend of Grenach Blanc and Clairette, made all in stainless steel tank.  Big aromas and flavors of peach, white flowers, and lime with a dusting of white pepper and crushed bitter mineral providing support on the mouthwatering finish. Concentrated, but not heavy, it's lovely to sip and will sing with fish or salads.

"Bright and lively, with racy verbena and honeysuckle notes pulling a core of yellow apple and melon rind flavors along. Shows a flash of lemon curd on the finish. Roussanne, Viognier, Grenache Blanc, Clairette and Marsanne."Wine Spectator 90 points

Kind of an old-school South-of-France red here with a bit of modern polish.  The blend is old-timey with 40% Grenache, 40% Caladoc, 10% Syrah and 10% Marselan all done in tank.  You'll certainly taste the warm, sunshiny, climate here in ripe plum and black raspberry fruit and there's a nice dose of black olive, thyme and lavender, too.  But the flavors stay as fresh as a daisy right on through the dusty, lightly chewy, finish.  Great all-purpose bistro red at a fine, weeknight, price.

This cuvee comes from the eastern portion of the Roussillon, just off the coast of the Mediterranean, and is a blend of 50% Grenache Blanc, 30% Chardonnay and the rest Roussanne, aged on lees in tank. This Northern Rhone specialist (based in St Joseph) does a great job with Cotes du Rhone from the south - like this ripe, plump, and easygoing blend of Grenache and 40% Syrah. Vintage 2016 is superb across the Rhone and here where dark, ripe, raspberry and black plum fruit gains complexity from accents of summer flowers and garrigue. Finishes fresh and long with savory, meaty, hints.  A smooth and robust sipper and match for pretty much anything.

Chapoutier Bila Haut Cotes Du Roussillon Villages 2016 Product #32637 (In Stock)
Chapoutier Bila Haut Cotes Du Roussillon Villages 2016 Chapoutier Bila Haut Cotes Du Roussillon Villages 2016

Well, now.  This is a whole lot of wine for under $20.  It's about 45% each Grenache  and Syrah plus 10% Carignan, all grown on slopes along the Agly Valley.  The gneiss and schist soils are very free draining, forcing the vines to really drive their roots down and pick up plenty of Roussillon's classic minerality to go with the dark fruit and lavender notes.  For all the richness, this is very poised and pure and while it will be lovely right now with lamb or beef it's likely to be better still in 2018.

"An inky colored effort, the 2016 Côtes du Roussillon Villages Les Vignes de Bila Haut offers a beautiful freshness and purity as well as fabulous notes of jammy blackberries, violets, pepper and hints of leather. Rich, concentrated and tasting like it costs four times the price, drink it over the coming 4-5 years."Wine Advocate 89-91 points

Dom Du Dragon Grande Cuvee Rose Cotes De Provence 2017 Product #33178 (In Stock)
Dom Du Dragon Grande Cuvee Rose Cotes De Provence 2017 Dom Du Dragon Grande Cuvee Rose Cotes De Provence 2017

Since the 2001 vintage first appeared in the store years ago, Dragon Rosé has been a consistent customer and staff favorite year after year.  The Lienard family tends about 50 acres of vines in Provence and makes this from Cinsault, Syrah, Grenache, and a nice dose of Rolle grown just for pink wine.  Grapes are grown specifically for rosé and are harvested at the perfect balance of fresh fruit and juicy acidity.  Once in the winery, they are lightly crushed and allowed to pick up a just right touch of pink color and red berry flavor before pressing and finishing fermentation in cool stainless steel tanks.

The 2017 edition is another winner, blending the ripeness of the 2015 and 2016 editions with a zesty, freshening, acidity.  Aromas and flavors of crushed raspberry and fresh strawberry gain complexity from a nice dash of Provencal herb and a wisp of sweet spice.  Starts tangy, broadens with nice richness, and then finishes crisp, refreshing, and dry with tart red berry and citrus pith lingering.  The interplay between rich ripeness and stony, dry, mouthwatering acidity is what we mean when we talk about “tension in wine.”  But if you prefer “Stupid Delicious,” we’re ok with that, too. This is what the pink wines of Provence are all about!

Dom Philippe Plantevin Cotes Du Rhone Blanc 2017 Product #33418 (In Stock)
Dom Philippe Plantevin Cotes Du Rhone Blanc 2017 Dom Philippe Plantevin Cotes Du Rhone Blanc 2017

Many of you have had the pleasure of meeting Philippe during one of his (too infrequent) visits to the store and many more of you have been drinking his robust Cotes du Rhone reds for years.  So you already know that Philippe is a humble, no fuss, no drama, winegrower who makes wines loaded with ripe fruit, bold textures, long finishes, and oodles of honest Rhone character.  What you might not yet have discovered:  Philippe is one of the best white wine makers working in the Southern Rhone today!

Especially 2017, where one sniff and sip will have you agreeing with me and his importer, Olivier Daubresse:  this is the best white wine Philippe has ever made.  As always, it’s a blend of 50% Viognier, 30% Grenache Blanc and 20% Marsanne done entirely in tank.  The nose is so pretty, with generous but poised aromas of summer peach and apricot, a squirt of Clementine, white flowers, and just a touch of crushed stone.  As Philippe’s Viognier vines have matured, the floral/stone fruit notes have become a bit more restrained, allowing notes of earth, mineral and citrus to become easier to small and taste.  The flavors are round and smooth on the front and mid-palate before the lemon, peach and crushed stone flavors gain power and breadth across the long, mouthwatering, finish.

A joy to drink tonight on its own or with a broad range of summery foods, this will handle heavier and more savory dishes come winter and mature gracefully for at least a decade.

Dom D'eole Rose Coteaux d'Aix-en-Provence 2017 Dom D'eole Rose Coteaux d'Aix-en-Provence 2017

Organic Grapes!  Winemaker Matthias Wimmer and owner Christian Raimont grow this complex blend of Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault, Grenache Blanc, Rolle, and Mourvedre with more care than most Chateauneuf (and yields more like fine Burgundy!).  The vineyards have been certified organic since 1996, yields are always 30 hectoliters/hectare or less, and grapes harvested by hand.  After a gentle crush and brief time on the skins to add just a pretty touch of color, each lot finishes fermentation in steel before blending for complexity and depth of flavor.

The wine is a lovely pale salmon and rose petal pink in the glass.  Give it a swirl, and you'll find the essence of ripe summer strawberry, juicy watermelon, and crunchy Rainier cherry fruit with subtle accents of crushed rose petal and garrigue.  Bright on entry, silky smooth on the mid-palate, and then bracingly fresh and dry and mineral-laced with bold flavors of ripe peach, red berries and Provençal herb.  Finishes long and fresh with pretty fruit and a hint of chamomile lingering.  This stylish, captivating, pink is wonderfully refreshing on its own but has enough structure to delight with salads, chicken, or grilled seafood.
