Castelmaure Corbieres Col Des Vents 2015 Product #31694 (In Stock)
Castelmaure Corbieres Col Des Vents 2015 Castelmaure Corbieres Col Des Vents 2015

There’s nothing not to like and everything to love about this robust blend of 50% Carignan, 35% Grenache, and 15% Syrah from the barren hills of Laguedoc’s Corbieres region.  Generous aromas of crushed blackberry, black plum, cracked pepper, cocoa, warm stones and more jump from the glass.  Take a sip and you’ll love how the briary blackberry, blueberry and raspberry fruit coat your mouth and the accents of chocolate, stone, herb and pepper give extra complexity.  While the flavors are big and the texture rich, there’s a welcome dose of juicy acidity and fine-grained tannins that make this refreshing drunk solo and flexible at table, too.

"What could be a hidden gem in the vintage, the 2015 Corbières Col des Vents is 50% Carignan, 30% Grenache and 20% Syrah that’s aging all in tank. A big, sexy, fruit-loaded effort, it offers a liquid blackberry like style of fruit as well as crushed herbs, pepper and a hint of earth. It should drink nicely right out of the gate."Wine Advocate 87-89 points

Moulin De Gassac Guilhem Rose 2016 Product #31771 (In Stock)
Moulin De Gassac Guilhem Rose 2016 Moulin De Gassac Guilhem Rose 2016

Our first 2016 rosé is a winner!  It’s equal parts Syrah and Carignan, grown and harvested fresh just for rosé.  After a few hours of fermentation, the juice is pressed off the black grape skins, giving it a just-right amount of color and structure while allowing the juice to retain all of its natural freshness and vibrancy.

As soon as you see this in your glass, you know you’re in for a treat.  It’s a beautifully transparent salmon pink that almost sparkles in sunshine.  Aromas of fresh picked strawberries and crushed red fruits – raspberries and cherries – get a lift from floral accents and a hint of citrus rind.  In the mouth, it’s bright and crisp with loads of berry fruit and just a touch of mineral, showcasing the short 2016 vintage’s silky texture and ripe fruit.  The acids come up on the finish and make your mouth water, leaving you looking for a little bite to eat or another refreshing sip.  Drink this on its own anytime you like, or pair it with anything from smoked salmon to fruited chicken salad.  “Berry” delicious!

Dom Pontbriand Vaucluse 2015 Product #31877 (In Stock)
Dom Pontbriand Vaucluse 2015 Dom Pontbriand Vaucluse 2015

Kind of an old-school South-of-France red here with a bit of modern polish.  The blend is old-timey with 40% Grenache, 40% Caladoc, 10% Syrah and 10% Marselan all done in tank.  You'll certainly taste the warm, sunshiny, climate here in ripe plum and black raspberry fruit and there's a nice dose of black olive, thyme and lavender, too.  But the flavors stay as fresh as a daisy right on through the dusty, lightly chewy, finish.  Great all-purpose bistro red at a fine, weeknight, price.

The kind of wine Languedoc does best - a great all-purpose, no oak, quaffer made from 60% Grenache (for ripe red fruit) and 40% Syrah (for meaty, smoky, accents). Dark red raspberry fruit holds center stage with hints of blackberry and savory notes of pepper and black olive for interest.  Juicy and easy drinking with a fun, mouthwatering, finish.  Tastes like $15 - and a good $15 red at that!

Moulin De Gassac Guilhem Rouge 2016 Product #32506 (In Stock)

While Mas de Daumas Gassac is most famous for its benchmark Languedoc estate-grown Bordeaux blends, we’ve always had a special fondness for their great value Guilhem wines. The family launched the Moulin de Gassac line-up, including Guilhem, to help preserve old-vine vineyards owned by neighbors who increasingly struggled to find buyers for their grapes and wines.  The Rouge is a blend of 40% Syrah, 30% Grenache, and 30% Carignan, all from 25-30 year-old dry-farmed vines the ripen beautifully in Languedoc’s warm, sunny, climate.

The 2014 does a wonderful job of marrying the rich, warm, ripeness and stony minerality you expect from Languedoc with remarkable freshness of fruit and fragrant berry blossom accents.  A mélange of blackberry, raspberry, cherry and strawberry fruit makes up the wine’s core, with surprisingly complex grace notes of fresh flowers, warm stones, and exotic sandalwood adding interest.  A burst of raspberry puree pushes through on the finish with crushed rock minerality, mouthwatering acids, and fine tannins giving support.  You’ll be happy enjoying this on its own at a party or while dinner cooks and love how it pairs with everything from lamb burgers to pizza

Dom Du Dragon Grande Cuvee Rose Cotes De Provence 2016 Product #31897 (In Stock)
Dom Du Dragon Grande Cuvee Rose Cotes De Provence 2016 Dom Du Dragon Grande Cuvee Rose Cotes De Provence 2016

Since the 2001 vintage first appeared in the store years ago, Dragon Rosé has been a consistent customer and staff favorite year after year.  The Lienard family tends about 50 acres of vines in Provence and makes this from Cinsault, Syrah, Grenache, and a nice dose of Rolle grown just for pink wine.  Grapes are grown specifically for rosé and are harvested at the perfect balance of fresh fruit and juicy acidity.  Once in the winery, they are lightly crushed and allowed to pick up a just right touch of pink color and red berry flavor before pressing and finishing fermentation in cool stainless steel tanks.  A lovely match for everything from grilled salmon to Salade Niçoise and delightful to sip on its own.

"Editors' Choice Located at the base of the Sainte-Victoire mountain, this vineyard, owned by the Dragon family for four generations, has produced a ripe wine, full-bodied and with concentration. It has raspberry flavors and a touch of spice that gives the wine extra richness."Wine Enthusiast 91 points

Now Presenting Paso Robles Red 2014 Now Presenting Paso Robles Red 2014

The classic Rhone blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre first gained New World fame in Australia.  But they do it darn well in California, too, especially in the very Rhone-like vineyards of Paso Robles.  A big, ripe, rich wine that gets an extra layer of polish and spice from French oak aging, it's a perfect cookout and party red with a just right touch of flash.

"Top 100 Values of 2017! This is quite a dynamic and layered wine, especially for the bargain price, with deep and hearty blackberry, caramel, rust, lavender and potpourri on the nose. The berry-led palate is rustic and unrefined, with feral flavors, peppery spice and decent acidity."Wine Enthusiast 90 points

Ch La Pujade Corbieres Le Petit Spencer 2015 Ch La Pujade Corbieres Le Petit Spencer 2015

"The Little Spencer" is the "fun" wine from this respected Corbieres estate in the heart of sunny Languedoc.  It's a blend of 50% Carignan plus 20% Mourvedre and 15% each Syrah and Grenache, all grown in a natural amphitheater that gives and extra dose of ripeness. This tastes and feels like a more expensive wine with deep, rich, blue/black fruit, complex accents of hot stone, licorice, and garrigue and a nicely chewy finish.  Fun stuff especially with rustic, herb-laced, foods.

"Spice- and smoke-accented cherry and dark berry aromas are complemented by suggestions of candied violet and cracked pepper. Spicy, energetic and sharply focused on the palate, offering concentrated bitter cherry and floral pastille flavors that open up slowly with air. Distinctly northern Rhône in personality and texture, featuring a peppery, floral-dominated finish, smooth tannins and excellent closing thrust and persistence. The quality of this bottling consistently outpaces its price and appellation, and that's especially true in this vintage."  Vinous (Raynolds) 91 points

Les Vignerons De Tavel Lirac Les Hauts d'Acantalys 2015 Product #31989 (In Stock)
Les Vignerons De Tavel Lirac Les Hauts d'Acantalys 2015 Les Vignerons De Tavel Lirac Les Hauts d'Acantalys 2015

SUPER VALUE ALERT!  Lirac is a lot like Chateauneuf but softer and more sweetly fruited.  And this is a top, prime, delicious example at a great price. Smells like Lirac with baked strawberry and red cherry on the nose with hints of flowers and warm tone.  Then it's more fresh then you'd expect on the palate with ripe strawberry and black cherry fruit and an exotic lilac note for complexity.  Nice and dusty on the finish where stone, fruit, and floral flavors linger.

"Youthful violet. Smoke-tinged black and blue fruit and licorice scents show good focus and a subtle hint of cracked pepper. Juicy and smooth in the mouth, offering fresh cherry and blueberry flavors and a touch of bitter chocolate. Shows good breadth and cling on the spicy finish, which is shaped by dusty tannins."  <b>Vinous (Raynolds) 89 points

Chapoutier Bila Haut Cotes Du Roussillon Villages 2016 Product #32637 (In Stock)
Chapoutier Bila Haut Cotes Du Roussillon Villages 2016 Chapoutier Bila Haut Cotes Du Roussillon Villages 2016

Well, now.  This is a whole lot of wine for under $20.  It's about 45% each Grenache  and Syrah plus 10% Carignan, all grown on slopes along the Agly Valley.  The gneiss and schist soils are very free draining, forcing the vines to really drive their roots down and pick up plenty of Roussillon's classic minerality to go with the dark fruit and lavender notes.  For all the richness, this is very poised and pure and while it will be lovely right now with lamb or beef it's likely to be better still in 2018.

"An inky colored effort, the 2016 Côtes du Roussillon Villages Les Vignes de Bila Haut offers a beautiful freshness and purity as well as fabulous notes of jammy blackberries, violets, pepper and hints of leather. Rich, concentrated and tasting like it costs four times the price, drink it over the coming 4-5 years."Wine Advocate 89-91 points

Dom Jean Royer Le Petit Roy 15eme Product #31415 (In Stock)
Dom Jean Royer Le Petit Roy 15eme Dom Jean Royer Le Petit Roy 15eme

Our second shot at Jean-Marie Royer’s everyday wine shows why waiting a bit can be a virtue even for “little” wines!  Because as impressive as this was last Fall, the 2015 edition of Petit Roy is simply stunning right now.  For this wine, Jean-Marie blends fruit from a small plot just outside the Chateauneuf boundaries and a family vineyard inside the boundaries that doesn’t qualify for the CdP AOC because it has too much clay.  Then – the secret sauce – he adds a bit of “real” Chateauneuf du Pape juice that didn’t get into the main wines.  Because the rules forbid declassifying CdP to Cotes du Rhone, this is legally just “table wine” and cannot carry any indication of area of origin or vintage (although, as you can see, he cheats a bit there).

In 2015, La Petit Roy isn’t very “Petit.”  In fact, it’s a pretty big and burly thing with deep base notes of black raspberry and roasted strawberry plus lively accents of crushed herb, lavender, black pepper and spice.  The grapes are mainly Grenache with seasoning splashes of Syrah (for depth) and Alicante (for herbal complexity and color).  Very Provençal and pretty enough to serve at a party but with more than enough heft to pair with leftover leg of lamb.  It’s wide open and ready to love today but will still be pumping out joy in 2020. Fantastic value for a “baby CdP.”

Dom Philippe Plantevin Cotes Du Rhone Rouge 2015 Product #32017 (In Stock)
Dom Philippe Plantevin Cotes Du Rhone Rouge 2015 Dom Philippe Plantevin Cotes Du Rhone Rouge 2015

A 50/50 blend of Grenache and Syrah, and in the great 2015 vintage, it’s one of the sexiest releases of this robust Rhone we’ve tasted yet.  Big, Rhone-ish, aromas here with a big dose of black raspberry and black cherry, a touch of dried plum, a punch of dark chocolate, and a beguiling accent of candied violets.  The wine completely envelops your palate with ripe fruit that remains remarkably fresh – think crushed raspberry, mid-season cherry, and black plums just plucked from the tree.  And, like any really fine wine, it’s better still on the killer finish where tangy cherry, chocolate, red plum, and smoked stone flavors sail on over fine-grained tannins.  About as versatile and food friendly as Cotes du Rhone gets, you’ll love this with summer burgers and find yourself reaching for a bottle to drink with pizza, sausages, lamb, and more for at least the next 4-5 years.

Dom du Bois St Jean Cotes du Rhone l'Intrepid 2015 Product #31775 (In Stock)
Dom du Bois St Jean Cotes du Rhone l'Intrepid 2015 Dom du Bois St Jean Cotes du Rhone l'Intrepid 2015

Our first thought on tasting this robust, complex, Southern Rhone red?  "Tastes like a mini-Chateauneuf du Pape!" Most Cotes du Rhone is 80-100% Grenache, which usually means fun, if uncomplicated, easy-drinking reds. Here Grenache makes up only 60% of the blend, with big doses of Syrah (30%) and tricky to ripen Mourvedre (15%) ramping up the wine's richness, texture, and earthy, meaty, character.  A small dash of Cariganan adds spice and minerality that helps elevate l'Intripde far beyond average Cotes du Rhone quality and starts to challenge much more expensive Chateauneuf du Pape!

The wine opens with big aromas of dark fruit - blackberry, black raspberry, blueberry, plum - plus notes of roasted raspberry, smoked meat and garrigue - wild thyme, lavender and olive.  In the mouth it's remarkably dense and sweetly fruited for Cotes du Rhone, with more dark fruit, garrigue and spice flavors and a rich texture that borders on velvety.  The finish is long and earthy and complex, with fine tannins giving support for food but not interfering with solo sipping.  A delicious, outstanding value, red to enjoy now and over the next 5 years.

Dom Philippe Plantevin Cotes Du Rhone Blanc 2016 Dom Philippe Plantevin Cotes Du Rhone Blanc 2016

Another lovely vintage for this classy Rhone white that puts many (much more expensive) Chateauneuf-du-Pape whites to shame.  As always, it’s about half Viognier for peachy fruit and fragrance plus Grenache blanc for body and Marsanne for complexity and minerality.

The excitement starts on the nose, where you’ll find generous aromas of creamy peach, fruit blossom, Clementine and crushed chalk. Take a sip, and you'll experience an explosion of bright apricot, yellow peach, honeysuckle and mint flavors up front before chalk, wet stone, and peach skin notes emerge at the end. The juicy acids keep this rich, medium-bodied, white fresh and make it a great choice for drinking as an aperitif, with cheeses, or with grilled fish and fruit salsa.  It will age surprisingly well if you can keep your hands off it now!

Dom d'Eole Cuvee Tradition Blanc 2016 Product #32179 (In Stock)

Organic Grapes!  Provence is more famous for it's red and pink wines, but with great care and skill, it's possible to create compelling whites here, too.  This comes from certified organic vines of snappy fresh Rolle (aka Vermentino in Italy) and rich, luxurious, Roussanne grown in a hidden vineyard shaped like the tongue of a dog.  The sandy soils let both varietals retain their freshness while Provencal warmth, sunshine, and the blustery Mistrial wind ensure plenty of ripeness.

Aromas of crushed yellow peach, tangerine, and crushed stone lead to a creamy, but bone dry, mouthful of peach, peach skin, lime, salty stone and tangy citrus flavors.  Provencal herb notes come up on the back and the stone, citrus, and mineral flavors linger on and on through the long, saline, finish.  A lovely wine for salads and seafood or just to sip.
