Castelmaure Corbieres Col Des Vents 2015 Product #31694 (In Stock)
Castelmaure Corbieres Col Des Vents 2015 Castelmaure Corbieres Col Des Vents 2015

There’s nothing not to like and everything to love about this robust blend of 50% Carignan, 35% Grenache, and 15% Syrah from the barren hills of Laguedoc’s Corbieres region.  Generous aromas of crushed blackberry, black plum, cracked pepper, cocoa, warm stones and more jump from the glass.  Take a sip and you’ll love how the briary blackberry, blueberry and raspberry fruit coat your mouth and the accents of chocolate, stone, herb and pepper give extra complexity.  While the flavors are big and the texture rich, there’s a welcome dose of juicy acidity and fine-grained tannins that make this refreshing drunk solo and flexible at table, too.

"What could be a hidden gem in the vintage, the 2015 Corbières Col des Vents is 50% Carignan, 30% Grenache and 20% Syrah that’s aging all in tank. A big, sexy, fruit-loaded effort, it offers a liquid blackberry like style of fruit as well as crushed herbs, pepper and a hint of earth. It should drink nicely right out of the gate."Wine Advocate 87-89 points

Moulin De Gassac Guilhem Rose 2016 Product #31771 (In Stock)
Moulin De Gassac Guilhem Rose 2016 Moulin De Gassac Guilhem Rose 2016

Our first 2016 rosé is a winner!  It’s equal parts Syrah and Carignan, grown and harvested fresh just for rosé.  After a few hours of fermentation, the juice is pressed off the black grape skins, giving it a just-right amount of color and structure while allowing the juice to retain all of its natural freshness and vibrancy.

As soon as you see this in your glass, you know you’re in for a treat.  It’s a beautifully transparent salmon pink that almost sparkles in sunshine.  Aromas of fresh picked strawberries and crushed red fruits – raspberries and cherries – get a lift from floral accents and a hint of citrus rind.  In the mouth, it’s bright and crisp with loads of berry fruit and just a touch of mineral, showcasing the short 2016 vintage’s silky texture and ripe fruit.  The acids come up on the finish and make your mouth water, leaving you looking for a little bite to eat or another refreshing sip.  Drink this on its own anytime you like, or pair it with anything from smoked salmon to fruited chicken salad.  “Berry” delicious!

Dom De Chantepierre Cotes Du Rhone 2015 Dom De Chantepierre Cotes Du Rhone 2015

From the fine co-op in Tavel, this GSM blend shows off Tavel's best grape - Mourvedre - with style.  The aromas are rich, earthy, and loaded with garrigue and dark black fruit.  The dark blackberry and black raspberry fruit forms the core of the palate, with more of Mourvedre's classic earth and garrigue tones adding interest and a nice dose of firm tannin at the end.  Old-school fun.

Dom De La Bastide Cotes Du Rhone Rose 2016 Product #32008 (In Stock)
Dom De La Bastide Cotes Du Rhone Rose 2016 Dom De La Bastide Cotes Du Rhone Rose 2016

Here’s the bottom line:  if you love great Provençal rosé, then you’re going to flip for this wine and struggle to believe how inexpensive it is.  In what’s shaping up to be the finest French rosé vintage of at least the past decade, Baside’s Cotes du Rhone Rosé competes with some of the finest wines of the vintage on quality and simply crushes even average bottlings on price.

We’ve come to really love the simple, clean, approach Vincent and Stephanie Boyer bring to growing and making wine.  They farm family vineyards in and around Vissan, a cooler slice of the Southern Rhone not far from the foothills of the Alps.  They grow their grapes organically, keep yields low, and do as little as possible in the winery to allow the quality of their fruit to shine through in your glass.  The 2016 Rose is 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah, and 10% Cinsault and 100% delicious.  Huge aromas of strawberry, peach, watermelon, cherry and dusty herb really explode from your glass.  Then those mid-summer fruit flavors fill every nook and cranny of your mouth with extra lift from notes of citrus zest, more herb, and watermelon rind pickle – sweet, sour and spicy.  The finish is chalky, mouthwatering and dry, pulling you back for sip after sip.

Ch de St Louis Corbieres Prestige 2014 Product #30930 (In Stock)
Ch de St Louis Corbieres Prestige 2014 Ch de St Louis Corbieres Prestige 2014

Corbieres, in the heart of the Languedoc, is famous for turning rich, herb-scented, wines with plenty of heft and fruit - if sometimes a bit too much earthiness and chew.  Here, the team from Ch St Martin de la Garrigue crafts a juicy red that offers up all the good parts of Corbieres with none of the flaws.  It's a blend of Grenache (40%), Syrah (35%) and Cargignan (25%) picked nice and ripe - but not overripe! - and made carefully in tank.

You'll find plenty of the scents and flavors that make Corbieres so much fun - dark raspberry, ripe blueberry, and a big handful of fresh pine and herb - along with a satisfying smoky/meaty depth.  Carignan's bright blueberry fruit keeps things fresh and adds a nice touch of minerality to the fruit and herb-laced finish.  Fine, easy-drinking, fun at your next cookout or casual meal.

Dom Gres St Vincent Cotes Du Rhone Villages 2015 Product #31080 (In Stock)
Dom Gres St Vincent Cotes Du Rhone Villages 2015 Dom Gres St Vincent Cotes Du Rhone Villages 2015

From a unique, organic co-op in the Rhone valley, this delicious, Grenache-based blend delivers satisfying weight and earthiness but stays light on its feet. Unlike many co-ops that blend growers' fruit into one wine, here each makes their own. Though the blend is dominated by Grenache, the Syrah takes center stage on the nose, with classic notes of liquorice, black fruits, and a wonderful whiff of violets.

In the mouth luscious ripe black raspberry and blackberry dance with notes of coffee, olive, and garrigue.  The wine is ripe and full of fruit, but also vibrant and fresh from beginning to end.  Zingy, almost bubbling, fruit acids and fine tannins make this refreshing and a great wine for table.  Ripe, vivid, pure.

Dom d'Ourea Tire Bouchon Vin De France 2015 Product #31175 (In Stock)
Dom d'Ourea Tire Bouchon Vin De France 2015 Dom d'Ourea Tire Bouchon Vin De France 2015

"Tire Bouchon" is the French phrase for a corkscrew, but the literal translation is better:  Cork Puller.  And you're going to pull a lot of these corks this fall and winter! This is a throw-back (in terms of both time and how you'll drink it!) red made from Grenache, Syrah, and 10% old-timey Aramon and Oeillade Noire.  While it's all grown in Adrien Roustan's Vacqueyras vineyards, the old grapes aren't allowed, so it's bottled as Vin de France.  The winemaking is pretty old school, too.  All the grapes are tossed into the vat together, covered with some dry ice, and allowed to start fermentation as they will.  10 days in the fermenter, a few months resting in tank, and then ready for you to slurp!

It's friendly from the first sniff, with open, generous, aromas of crushed black raspberries, sweet cherry, violets, and a hint of ripe black olive.  Take a sip and let the party begin!  This wine just oozes sweet, fresh, very ripe red and black cherry/berry fruit with a touch of cracked pepper, lavender and rich loamy earth for complexity.  Juicy and mouthwatering, but not at all tart, with a bit of Black Forest cake (chocolate and sweet cherry) coming up on the supple, lingering, finish.  Sure, it's going to go swell with all kinds of casual foods - burgers, hot dogs, pizza, stews - but it will shine most brightly when shared with (soon to be very happy) friends!

Dom Rose Dieu Cotes Du Rhone Villages 2014 Product #31608 (In Stock)
Dom Rose Dieu Cotes Du Rhone Villages 2014 Dom Rose Dieu Cotes Du Rhone Villages 2014

Last year we brought you Damien Rozier’s outstanding Plan de Dieu 2012, a terrific, gutsy, Cotes du Rhone from the pebbly soils of one of the Southern Rhone’s most underappreciated regions.  Now we’re featuring his Cotes du Rhone Villages 2014 and we know it’s going to thrill you just as much!  It’s a robust blend of hand-harvested Grenache plus Mourvedre and Syrah with a bit of time in neutral wood casks.  But mainly it’s a ton of fun in your glass.

Big aromas of purple fruits – plum, berries, dark cherries – lead to juicy and fruit-filled flavors of crushed blue and black berries, sweet cherry, licorice and classic Rhone pepper and garrigue.  There’s a nice dose of fine-grained tannin here, making this a terrific match for casual foods, but more than enough suppleness and fruit to be enjoyable all on its own.  Ready to go tonight and sure to get even better over the next couple of years, this is a joyful wine to warm up any cold winter night.

Ch De Segries Cotes Du Rhone Rouge 2015 Product #31905 (In Stock)
Ch De Segries Cotes Du Rhone Rouge 2015 Ch De Segries Cotes Du Rhone Rouge 2015

Nothing super fancy here - just a really, really, good Cotes du Rhone at a great value price to enjoy with everything from burgers to lamb chops.  About half Grenache with 30% Syrah and then equal parts Carignan and Cinsault, mostly from vines planted in the 1920s and 1930s by former owner Count de Regis de Gatimel.  Most of the luscious, ripe, fruit ferments and ages in tank but part of the Syrah sees barrel to add richness and depth.

In the fantastic 2015 vintage, Segries Cotes du Rhone gushes with aromas and flavors of black berries, chocolate covered cherry, and "garrigue" - the blend of scrub pine, thyme, lavender, juniper and rosemary that provide the unique scent of Provnencal hills and vineyards. After it’s been open a bit, the aromas and flavors get even better with notes of crushed raspberry, lavender and cracked pepper  joining the party.  The bold fruit cloaks the ripe, velvety, tannins, making this as much fun to drink on its own as it is to put out on the dinner table.  A winner for now – 2020 and a strong candidate for Red Wine Value Of The Year!

Chapoutier Bila Haut Cotes Du Roussillon Villages 2015 Chapoutier Bila Haut Cotes Du Roussillon Villages 2015

Well, now.  This is a whole lot of wine for $15 (or less!).  It's about 45% each Grenache  and Syrah plus 10% Carignan, all grown on slopes along the Agly Valley.  The gneiss and schist soils are very free draining, forcing the vines to really drive their roots down and pick up plenty of Roussillon's classic minerality to go with the dark fruit and lavender notes.  For all the richness, this is very poised and pure and while it will be lovely right now with lamb or beef it's likely to be better still in 2018.

"The jaw-dropper in the lineup was the quality of the 2015 Haut Cotes de Roussillon Villages les Vignes de Bila Haut. While the entry level wine from this estate, the quality here is incredible, especially at the price point. Made from 50% Grenache, 40% Syrah and 10% Carignan from a mix of the estate’s terroirs, aged in concrete tanks and stainless steel, it offers a rich, concentrated and serious feel to go with fabulously pure notes of blackberries, black raspberries, crushed rock and melted licorice. Thick, unctuous and luxuriously textured, this will certainly be the greatest vintage of this cuvee to date."Wine Advocate 91-93 points

Xavier Cotes du Rhone 2012 Product #30949 (In Stock)
Xavier Cotes du Rhone 2012 Xavier Cotes du Rhone 2012

IT'S BACK!!!  Xavier Vignon consults with vine growers and winemakers at some of the Rhone’s most famous estates, and he takes just a bit of his fee in the form of grapes to make outstanding wines like this one.  Grenache from 80+ year-old vines, nicely rich Syrah, and a remarkable 25% Mourvedre – very generous for a wine at this price level – are all harvested ripe, fermented cool, and aged in concrete tank to retain 100% authentic Rhone character.

"The 2012 Côtes du Rhône is another beauty by this team. Licorice, roasted herbs, pepper and plenty of sweet fruit come together in this medium to full-bodied, layered, and textured effort. Made from 60% Grenache, and Mourvedre and Syrah that saw mostly concrete tank, it’s a smoking Côtes du Rhône (and a fabulous value) to drink over the coming 3-4 years."Wine Advocate 90 points

"The Little Spencer" is the "fun" wine from this respected Corbieres estate in the heart of sunny Languedoc.  It's a blend of 50% Carignan plus 20% Mourvedre and 15% each Syrah and Grenache, all grown in a natural amphitheater that gives and extra dose of ripeness. This tastes and feels like a more expensive wine with deep, rich, blue/black fruit, complex accents of hot stone, licorice, and garrigue and a nicely chewy finish.  Fun stuff especially with rustic, herb-laced, foods.

"Spice- and smoke-accented cherry and dark berry aromas are complemented by suggestions of candied violet and cracked pepper. Spicy, energetic and sharply focused on the palate, offering concentrated bitter cherry and floral pastille flavors that open up slowly with air. Distinctly northern Rhône in personality and texture, featuring a peppery, floral-dominated finish, smooth tannins and excellent closing thrust and persistence. Les Vignerons De Tavel Lirac Les Hauts d'Acantalys 2015 Les Vignerons De Tavel Lirac Les Hauts d'Acantalys 2015

SUPER VALUE ALERT!  Lirac is a lot like Chateauneuf but softer and more sweetly fruited.  And this is a top, prime, delicious example at a great price. Smells like Lirac with baked strawberry and red cherry on the nose with hints of flowers and warm tone.  Then it's more fresh then you'd expect on the palate with ripe strawberry and black cherry fruit and an exotic lilac note for complexity.  Nice and dusty on the finish where stone, fruit, and floral flavors linger.

"Youthful violet. Smoke-tinged black and blue fruit and licorice scents show good focus and a subtle hint of cracked pepper. Juicy and smooth in the mouth, offering fresh cherry and blueberry flavors and a touch of bitter chocolate. Shows good breadth and cling on the spicy finish, which is shaped by dusty tannins."  <b>Vinous (Raynolds) 89 points

Dom Jean Royer Le Petit Roy 15eme Product #31415 (In Stock)
Dom Jean Royer Le Petit Roy 15eme Dom Jean Royer Le Petit Roy 15eme

Our second shot at Jean-Marie Royer’s everyday wine shows why waiting a bit can be a virtue even for “little” wines!  Because as impressive as this was last Fall, the 2015 edition of Petit Roy is simply stunning right now.  For this wine, Jean-Marie blends fruit from a small plot just outside the Chateauneuf boundaries and a family vineyard inside the boundaries that doesn’t qualify for the CdP AOC because it has too much clay.  Then – the secret sauce – he adds a bit of “real” Chateauneuf du Pape juice that didn’t get into the main wines.  Because the rules forbid declassifying CdP to Cotes du Rhone, this is legally just “table wine” and cannot carry any indication of area of origin or vintage (although, as you can see, he cheats a bit there).

In 2015, La Petit Roy isn’t very “Petit.”  In fact, it’s a pretty big and burly thing with deep base notes of black raspberry and roasted strawberry plus lively accents of crushed herb, lavender, black pepper and spice.  The grapes are mainly Grenache with seasoning splashes of Syrah (for depth) and Alicante (for herbal complexity and color).  Very Provençal and pretty enough to serve at a party but with more than enough heft to pair with leftover leg of lamb.  It’s wide open and ready to love today but will still be pumping out joy in 2020. Fantastic value for a “baby CdP.”
