Il Bastardo Sangiovese Toscana 2016 Product #32638 (In Stock)
Il Bastardo Sangiovese Toscana 2016 Il Bastardo Sangiovese Toscana 2016

In Wood Case While It Lasts!  A fun, flavorful, and fine value Tuscan Sangiovese made by winemaker Paolo Masi at Tuscany’s Renzo Masi winery from grapes grown near Florence and Chianti Ruffina.  The Masi family’s Fattoria di Basciano has been hailed by Wine Advocate as “one of the rising stars of Rufina,” and their Renzo Masi project was designed to use friends’ and neighbors’ grapes to make “wines with vibrant territorial personality."  This special project by the Masi’s for importer Bob Shack does that in spades and at a fantastic value price to boot!

Ripe aromas and flavors of cherry and red berry start off bright and fresh and then get darker with a little air. The juicy acidity and light tannins make this easy to just sip, but give it enough substance to enjoy with pizza, burgers, or a big bowl of pasta and red sauce.  There's enough going on here to hold your interest through a few glasses and - especially at this price - tempt you to open a second bottle as the night goes on.  Fun stuff and fantastic value.

Fiore Chianti Concreto 2015 Product #32489 (In Stock)
Fiore Chianti Concreto 2015 Fiore Chianti Concreto 2015

Chianti's Sangiovese grape needs a little air while it's maturing to tame its sharp tannins, which is why most Chianti spends time in some kind of wood barrel.  Here the Fiore family has taken ripe, juicy, fruit-filled Sangiovese that's fermented in steel and ages it not in wood but in concrete tanks.  Like oak, concrete allows a bit of air to seep into the wine to round off the tannins, but it avoids adding oak flavor (or oak tannins).  The result is a rarity - a 100% Sangiovese Chianti that's not only great with pizza, pasta, and grilled foods.  It's also just fun to drink as a refreshing anytime red wine value!  Plenty of juicy cherry and red berry fruit holds center stage with subtle hints of juniper and herb.  Full and fleshy on the palate and then mouthwateringly fresh on the smooth, generous, finish.  A "Concreto" success!

Colsanto Ruris Umbria 2013 Product #30794 (In Stock)
Colsanto Ruris Umbria 2013 Colsanto Ruris Umbria 2013

Here's our single best-selling Italian wine of the past five years - a fantastic value that tastes like it costs twice as much as it does. The wine is mainly (70%) Sangiovese and delivers plenty of that variety's juicy black cherry fruit. But, the 20% Merlot in the blend rounds out the mid-palate and keeps the wine soft while the secret ingredient -- 10% Sagrantino -- adds spice and complexity uncommon in Umbrian wines. Sure, it goes well with pizza and robust pasta sauces, but there's enough going on to handle game and hard, salty, cheeses and a soft enough finish just to drink at a party. Fantastic value.

San Crispino Chianti Classico 2014 Product #31790 (In Stock)
San Crispino Chianti Classico 2014 San Crispino Chianti Classico 2014

Proof that not all Chianti Classico is "serious" - although this is seriously fun to drink!  It's 100% Sangiovese from the best part of the Chianti zone with minimal wood influence.  It's bursting with juicy black cherry fruit with just a touch of earthy/leathery accents and spice. Really pumps out generous fruit over nicely grippy tannins.  An excellent value for pizza and pasta.

Poggio Alloro Chianti DOCG 2015 Product #31858 (In Stock)
Poggio Alloro Chianti DOCG 2015 Poggio Alloro Chianti DOCG 2015

Here’s proof that great farming and straight-ahead winemaking can deliver fine Chianti – and even finer value! – from outside the Classico zone.  More and more Chianti is either all Sangiovese or Sangiovese strengthened with dollops of Cabernet or Syrah.  Here, a family dedicated to natural, organic, farming turns back to Tuscan tradition to make Chianti from an old-school blend of grapes:  Sangiovese, Canaiolo, Colorino and Ciliegiolo.  Sangiovese gives the wine heft and structure, while Canaiolo adds volume, Colorino deepens the color, and Ciliegiolo – Sangiovese’s genetic parent – soft red cherry fruit.

In the fantastic 2015 vintage, all of this comes together to deliver a ripe, zesty, Chianti that’s very easy to drink.  Ripe black and red cherry fruit forms the wine’s core and gains interest and complexity from accents of crushed violets, red licorice, rich earth, and sweet spice accents.  There’s no oak influence at all, allowing the ripe fruit to shine through while retaining outstanding freshness and just the right touch of structure at the end.  A fine party Chianti, for sure, and one that will be as much fun to drink with a big bowl of pasta as with burgers or rosemary-scented pork.

Tenuta Di Capraia Chianti Classico 2014 Product #31672 (In Stock)
Tenuta Di Capraia Chianti Classico 2014 Tenuta Di Capraia Chianti Classico 2014

Just another 90 point release from this maker of fine, elegant, smooth, Chianti.

"The 2014 Chianti Classico is delicate, focused and very nicely done. This is a distinctly translucent, high-acid style very much shaped by the cool growing season. Bright red cherry, mint and rose petal add an attractive aromatic top register throughout. Tenuta di Capraia turned out a lovely Chianti Classico in 2014. Best of all, pricing is exceedingly fair. I would prefer to drink this mid-weight Chianti Classico over the next few years."  Vinous (Galloni) 90 points

Having re-established their mastery of Chianti Classico, this old Tuscan house is now offering a fresher, younger, bottling for easy drinking anytime.  It's a blend of Sangiovese and Merlot (about 20%) from vineyards just outside the Classico zone aged in large cask for 12 months. The wine's delicious, with hearty black cherry, chocolate and herb notes and a nicely plush, friendly, texture.  Just enough tannin to hold up to food and plenty of dark, chocolaty, richness lingering.  Fun!

Perticaia Umbria Rosso 2016 Product #32940 (In Stock)

From the relatively young estate of Perticaia, created as a "retirement" gig by old Tuscan hand Guido Guardigli comes this delicious, goes-with-everything red.  He launched this new estate with his family in land-locked Umbria, naming it for the dialect word for "plow" - and just as the plow helped Umbria to prosperity by transforming from a grazing to farming region, Guido hopes his estate will "open the earth" to exciting new wines.

His entry-level red is a joy, fresh and fruity with deep aromas and flavors of black cherry, juicy raspberry, and a dash of sweet spice.  Sangiovese (80%) provides the core of fruit and a zesty structure while Colorino and Merlot (10% each) soften up the finish and add top- and base-notes, respectively.  A great pizza/salami/grilled sausage wine that gets richer and more intensely fruited with air or brighter and fresher with a light chill.  Much more interesting than 90% of wine labeled “Chianti” at this price!

Casaloste Rosso Maniero Toscana IGT 2014 Casaloste Rosso Maniero Toscana IGT 2014

This could almost be labeled Chianti Classico (and actually has some declassified Chianti juice in it), but with just 65% Sangiovese, it's a tad under the minimum.  The 35% other grapes - mainly Merlot and Canaiolo - soften Sangiovese's bite and add a nice layer of richness and depth to this all tank blend.  Dark cherry and bitter chocolate aromas and flavors get a nice lift from lemony acidity and fresh, juicy, raspberry.  There's enough structure and weight to make this a great table wine but it's supple enough to just sip, too.

"You absolutely can't go wrong with a strong and food-friendly wine like this. The 2015 Chianti Classico (95% Sangiovese and 5% Canaiolo) is not a particularly complex wine, but it does deliver on other levels. It shows beautiful color saturation and a robust appearance that denotes texture and extraction. The bouquet is luscious and lively with dark cherry, blackberry preserve, oak spice and toast."Wine Advocate 90 points

Casaloste Chianti Classico 2014 Product #32295 (In Stock)
Casaloste Chianti Classico 2014 Casaloste Chianti Classico 2014

Casaloste’s vineyards lie in the heart of the “Conca d’Oro” – the “Golden Shell” where you’ll also find growers like Fontodi, Castello dei Rampolla, and other of Chianti’s greats.  Proprietor and winemaker Giovanni d'Orsi's Chianti Classico is 90% Sangiovese and 10% Merlot, hand harvested at optimal ripeness, fermented in tank and then aged 12 months in large (500 liter) French oak cask.  An amazing wine for a "challenging" vintage, tt’s loaded with rich Chianti black cherry fruit with accents of violet, leather and chocolate.  There’s a depth and richness here that takes this to a higher level than the average Classico and fantastic mid-palate energy.  You’ll love it now -2024 with mushroom pasta and grilled beef.

"The 2014 Chianti Classico is bright, focused and impeccably balanced. Veins of acidity give the flavors striking nuance and energy. Sweet red plum, cherry, mocha and spice extend the finish in this gorgeous, super-expressive Chianti Classico from Casaloste. This is a terrific effort for the vintage."   Vinous (Galloni) 92 points

Voliero Rosso Di Montalcino 2015 Product #32382 (In Stock)
Voliero Rosso Di Montalcino 2015 Voliero Rosso Di Montalcino 2015

We sometimes think of Rosso di Montalcino as "baby Brunello," and some winemakers craft their Rosso in that style:  rich, dark, powerful and structured if just a touch less deep than Brunello.  But Andrea Cortonesi’s Voliero Rosso di Montalcino 2015 is something different.  It certainly captures the dark fruit and layered complexity of Sangiovese Grosso grown in the sandier soils of Montalino's norther vineyards.  But this is no "almost Brunello" - instead, it's a wine of unique purity, grace and even finesse that is uniquely Rosso.

It's also really, really, delicious!  Aromas of crushed berries, violets, spice and fresh leather all waft from the glass with the fruit getting darker and more prominent with air. In the mouth it glides across your palate with beautifully purity and deftness, layering fresh raspberry and cherry fruit with floral, spice and fresh earth accents. On the finish, the sweet fruit keeps on singing out over very fine, ripe, tannins and tangy cherry juice acidity.  Although the aromas and flavors are very Montalcino, the texture and freshness resemble a top Willamette Valley Pinot Noir, and this will work like that with salmon, grilled beef, and mushroom dishes.

A long-time Chianti benchmark that always runs to the more elegant side of Sangiovese is prettier than ever here.

"A tangy and fresh red with plum, dried lemon and berry character. Medium body, bright fruit and a fruity finish."  James Suckling 91 points

"This wine offers excellent value and with 160,000 bottles produced, it should be easy to find. The 2014 Chianti Classico is 80% Sangiovese, 15% Canaiolo and 5% Syrah, aged in small and large oak barrels for one year. It offers beautifully polished and fine aromas of wild berry, toasted almond, grilled herb and blue violet. Montenidoli Toscana Rosso Sono Montenidoli 2015 Product #32932 (In Stock)

One of Tuscany's most famed estates - but only in Italy and mainly among the lucky few who met the late Sergio Muratori and Elisabetta Fagiuoli, Sergio's very much alive cofounder and creator of Montenidoli in the Chianti hills not far from San Gimignano.  The 24ha acres of vines are nestled into 250ha of woodlands, rising from ancient seabed soils at the base to blood-red, iron-rich, remnants of the Triassic period at the top of the hill.  These are the oldest soils in Tuscany and the only place they are planted to vine.

Elisabetta's Sangiovese grows naturally (only a little copper or sulfur as needed) in the poor red soils, ripening stunning cherry and strawberry fruit flavors while sucking up and sharing layer up on layer of iron ore minerality.  Aging a year in neutral oak gives the wine some roundness, but the tannins here are still classically firm and mouthcoating - the kind of big mouthful of tannin that's satisfying and mouthwatering, not hard or bitter.  The wine's delicious and rare and priced far, far, below its value.  Try it.

Castello La Leccia Chianti Classico Riserva Giuliano 2013 Product #32013 (In Stock)
Castello La Leccia Chianti Classico Riserva Giuliano 2013 Castello La Leccia Chianti Classico Riserva Giuliano 2013

Full confession – we’re not normally fans of Italian “Riserva” wines.  Even though most use the estate’s best fruit, the extra time in oak (up to a year) often dries the wine out, kills the fruit, and gives sticky, drying, tannins that rob the wines of all their fun.  Here, though, we have a Chianti Classico Riserva that soars above the norm in every way!

Francesco Daddi made the first vintage in 2012 in honor of his father, Giuland.  It’s built on the estate’s best Sangiovese plus a splash of Malvasia Nero – a favorite blend of Giuland’s – and given 18 months in French oak followed by extra time in concrete tank and bottle.  The aromas are sexy and sophisticated, with deep cherry/berry fruit framed by notes of fresh earth, sweet spice, and light herb.  There’s a ton going on in your mouth, but the bold burst of black raspberry fruit pulses through the layers of tobacco, spice, smoke and fresh flower flavors.  The fruit keeps on pumping through the long, complex, and firm finish in a wine that has the structure to age a decade and shine now with rich, dry-aged, beef.

It's amazing that this small (15 hectare) estate can make such great wines and still stay under the radar of point-chasing collectors. The 2012 is open and sleek but lacking nothing in power and depth.

"Bright red. Delicate strawberry and minerals on the nose. Then fresh and juicy, with vibrat acidity lifting the bright red berry and floral flavors. Finishes long with zingy acid bite and a lovely floral quality."  Vinous 90 points

Fattoria La Lecciaia Brunello Di Montalcino Riserva 2010 Fattoria La Lecciaia Brunello Di Montalcino Riserva 2010

A stunner from the brilliant 2010 harvest, showing nicely now with air and shining through 2029 at least.

"Plum and orange peel with hints of milky chocolate follow through to a full body, silky palate. Typical outstanding Brunello 2010 riserva. Drink or hold."  James Suckling 93 points

"A powerful, incisive wine, the 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva hits the palate with bruising tannins, and plenty of intense, mineral/savory/ feral overtones. Readers should be prepared to cellar the 2010 for at last another few years, as the wine is pretty closed down today. Still, this is an expressive, if somewhat burly and brooding, Riserva from La Lecciaia. The mysterious, somewhat elusive personality that makes Sangiovese so intriguing is very much in evidence. Sweet floral and spice notes add aromatic lift on the finish."  Vinous (Galloni) 93 points

"The star of the show among La Lecciaia's new releases is the mid weight 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva. A little slow to open, the wine shows power and depth followed by a pretty embroidery of varietal aromas. This wine is focused on the small details and the finer nuances. Lingering aromas of wild berry, toasted nut, smoke, wet earth, cola and balsam herb add brightness and buoyancy to the bouquet. There is a dry mineral note on the finish that serves to give weight and definition. The wine reveals tight tannins and a silky feel. Drink 2017-2029"Wine Advocate 93 points
