Colsanto Ruris Umbria 2013 Product #30794 (In Stock)
Colsanto Ruris Umbria 2013 Colsanto Ruris Umbria 2013

Here's our single best-selling Italian wine of the past five years - a fantastic value that tastes like it costs twice as much as it does. The wine is mainly (70%) Sangiovese and delivers plenty of that variety's juicy black cherry fruit. But, the 20% Merlot in the blend rounds out the mid-palate and keeps the wine soft while the secret ingredient -- 10% Sagrantino -- adds spice and complexity uncommon in Umbrian wines. Sure, it goes well with pizza and robust pasta sauces, but there's enough going on to handle game and hard, salty, cheeses and a soft enough finish just to drink at a party. Fantastic value.

San Crispino Chianti Classico 2014 Product #31790 (In Stock)
San Crispino Chianti Classico 2014 San Crispino Chianti Classico 2014

Proof that not all Chianti Classico is "serious" - although this is seriously fun to drink!  It's 100% Sangiovese from the best part of the Chianti zone with minimal wood influence.  It's bursting with juicy black cherry fruit with just a touch of earthy/leathery accents and spice. Really pumps out generous fruit over nicely grippy tannins.  An excellent value for pizza and pasta.

Castello La Leccia Vivai Del Cavaliere Toscana Rosso 2015 Product #32021 (In Stock)
Castello La Leccia Vivai Del Cavaliere Toscana Rosso 2015 Castello La Leccia Vivai Del Cavaliere Toscana Rosso 2015

An estate dating from 1077 is going to have deep roots, but it's especially exciting when a strong sense of tradition gets paired with a touch of modern innovation. Owner/winegrower  Francesco Daddi has gone "back to the future" a bit by converting this prime estate near Castellina in Chianti to 100% organic farming and returning to the practice of blending Malvasia Nera with his Chianti Sangiovese.

Here he innovates by selecting small lots of what could be Chianti Classico, giving them a lighter extraction and then bottling 85% Sangiovese and 15% Malvasia with zero time in oak.  The result is a festive, fun, wine that's bursting with juicy black cherry, a hint of licorice root, and lots of floral complexity.  The structure is friendly - fresh and lightly tannic - inviting summer sipping with a light chill or warming it up and airing it out so more dark, spicy, fruit emerges to pair with pizza, pasta or richer foods.  Delicious stuff.

Poggio Alloro Chianti DOCG 2015 Product #31858 (In Stock)
Poggio Alloro Chianti DOCG 2015 Poggio Alloro Chianti DOCG 2015

Here’s proof that great farming and straight-ahead winemaking can deliver fine Chianti – and even finer value! – from outside the Classico zone.  More and more Chianti is either all Sangiovese or Sangiovese strengthened with dollops of Cabernet or Syrah.  Here, a family dedicated to natural, organic, farming turns back to Tuscan tradition to make Chianti from an old-school blend of grapes:  Sangiovese, Canaiolo, Colorino and Ciliegiolo.  Sangiovese gives the wine heft and structure, while Canaiolo adds volume, Colorino deepens the color, and Ciliegiolo – Sangiovese’s genetic parent – soft red cherry fruit.

In the fantastic 2015 vintage, all of this comes together to deliver a ripe, zesty, Chianti that’s very easy to drink.  Ripe black and red cherry fruit forms the wine’s core and gains interest and complexity from accents of crushed violets, red licorice, rich earth, and sweet spice accents.  There’s no oak influence at all, allowing the ripe fruit to shine through while retaining outstanding freshness and just the right touch of structure at the end.  A fine party Chianti, for sure, and one that will be as much fun to drink with a big bowl of pasta as with burgers or rosemary-scented pork.

Fortunately, this wine with a mouthful of a name delivers a mouthful of delight!  Aromas of purple flowers, crushed black cherry, smoke and leather lead to big flavors of black cherry and plum with accents of spice and licorice.  Juicy up front, broad in the middle, and crisp and energetic at the end.  A terrific blend of Sangiovese (85%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (15%) that’s both seductively rich and brightly refreshing.  Not much you’re likely to put on your table that won’t play nicely with this terrific value.

Castello La Leccia Chianti Classico 2014 Product #32187 (In Stock)
Castello La Leccia Chianti Classico 2014 Castello La Leccia Chianti Classico 2014

You may have heard that vintage 2014 was “challenging” in Tuscany.  That’s not true – at most estates it was downright awful.  Cold, wet and cloudy weather throughout the growing season meant most growers were unable to ripen their fruit fully and had to battle constantly with rot in the vineyard and winery.  If they were able to make Chianti Classico at all, it was almost always light in color and body, tart and tangy, and lacking in concentration or depth.

Which is why this 2014 is such a stunning treat!  The combination of heavy, hard, handwork in the vineyards all season long, higher altitude and well-drained vineyards, and using all the fruit normally destined for the Riserva Chianti in the Classico gives a wine with fine dark color and plenty of concentration and richness.  At this young state, it’s all about the rich raspberry and black cherry fruit with subtle accents of violets and oak spice.  Round and full on the palate, but never heavy or think, the fruit courses across your palate to finish clean, pure and fruity.  Fine tannins make this a winner with pasta dishes and even better with a slab of just-grilled, grass-fed, beef.

Dievole Chianti Classico 2013 Dievole Chianti Classico 2013

A old-time great that fell into mass-production blandness roars back into greatness with this pure, silky, Chianti. Smooth, red fruited, and classy.

"Dievole's 2013 Chianti Classico is super-impressive. A blast of dark cherries, smoke, leather, tobacco and dark spices hit the palate as this large-scaled, virile Chianti Classico. Dark and brooding in style, the 2013 boasts magnificent depth in a large-scaled Chianti Classico endowed with tremendous depth. Look for the Dievole Chianti Classico to be one of the sleepers of the vintage."  Vinous (Galloni) 91+ points

"Welcome back! I say this to the ultimate come-back kid: Dievole in Vagliagli near Castellina-in-Chianti. The 2013 Chianti Classico does a great job of underlining the natural characteristics of Sangiovese. If a #nofilter hashtag could be applied as a sensorial characteristic in wine writing, it is a fitting descriptor to use in the case of this wine. It offers a clean view of cherry, wild berry, pressed flower and balsam herb. This is a wine of beautiful purity that offers a non-interventionist's approach."Wine Advocate 91 points

Castello La Leccia Chianti Classico Riserva Giuliano 2013 Product #32013 (In Stock)
Castello La Leccia Chianti Classico Riserva Giuliano 2013 Castello La Leccia Chianti Classico Riserva Giuliano 2013

Full confession – we’re not normally fans of Italian “Riserva” wines.  Even though most use the estate’s best fruit, the extra time in oak (up to a year) often dries the wine out, kills the fruit, and gives sticky, drying, tannins that rob the wines of all their fun.  Here, though, we have a Chianti Classico Riserva that soars above the norm in every way!

Francesco Daddi made the first vintage in 2012 in honor of his father, Giuland.  It’s built on the estate’s best Sangiovese plus a splash of Malvasia Nero – a favorite blend of Giuland’s – and given 18 months in French oak followed by extra time in concrete tank and bottle.  The aromas are sexy and sophisticated, with deep cherry/berry fruit framed by notes of fresh earth, sweet spice, and light herb.  There’s a ton going on in your mouth, but the bold burst of black raspberry fruit pulses through the layers of tobacco, spice, smoke and fresh flower flavors.  The fruit keeps on pumping through the long, complex, and firm finish in a wine that has the structure to age a decade and shine now with rich, dry-aged, beef.

Biodynamic and very, very, pure.

"A dense and rich red with chocolate and leather. Hints of chestnuts. Medium to full body, dense fruit for the vintage. Excellent. Drink now."  James Suckling 91 points

"Among the many new releases I tasted from this vintage, this wine offers an extremely pure and genuine expression of Sangiovese. The 2014 Chianti Classico shows wild and unpredictable aromas of wild berry, white almond and freshly milled peppercorn. There are subtle nuances of blue flower and moist earth as well. But this wine really excels when it comes to showing the tangy and spicy side of Sangiovese. The mouthfeel is thin and crisp, but this wine also shows introspective grace and inner elegance. The tannins are sweet and firm."Wine Advocate 90+ points

Casaloste Chianti Classico Riserva 2011 Product #31658 (In Stock)
Casaloste Chianti Classico Riserva 2011 Casaloste Chianti Classico Riserva 2011

Giovanni d'Orsi crafts this wine from the very best Sangiovese grapes he grows in the very best region of Chianti - the Conca d’Oro – and blends in 8% or so of the best barrels of Merlot and other permitted varieties in the cellar.  He then ages his wine for 14 months in high-quality French oak barriques to soften Sangiovese’s hard hedges and add complexity.  It's from the great 2011 Chianti harvest, and it’s clear right away that there was more than enough fruit and power here to not only stand up to the Riserva treatment but to actually benefit from it.  It’s young and there’s still a bit of primary oak showing on the nose and palate, but the real story here is the dark, rich, cherry and berry fruit, the plush texture, and the long and mouthwatering finish.  Drink with a decant now or cellar through 2026.

Poggio Antico Brunello Di Montalcino 2011 Product #31822 (In Stock)
Poggio Antico Brunello Di Montalcino 2011 Poggio Antico Brunello Di Montalcino 2011

One of Brunello's younger estates, Poggio Antico was founded in 1984 when current owner/winemaker Paola Gloder's father purchased 50 acres of clay and limestone vineyards in the southern part of the Brunello zone.  It can be hot here - especially in 2011 - but Poggio Antico's vines grow on the highest plateau of this part of the zone at 1476 feet above sea level.  Plenty of hot sun during the day gives ripeness while cooler, high altitude, nights help preserve freshness and acids may other growers lost during the warm growing season.  This wine is fermented in cool tanks and then aged in classic, large, Slavonian oak casks to soften the wine without taking on any overt oak flavors.  It’s a beauty right now and over the next 5-7 years.

“Bright aromas of candied cherry with citrus rind. Full body, firm and silky tannins with plenty of fruit and a clean and bright undertone. So delicious now to drink. Why wait?”  James Suckling 93 points

“The 2011 Brunello di Montalcino is a rich and luscious wine that pulls you in with the first sip. The bouquet is very polished and bright with a wonderful aromatic presentation that spans from red cherry to blackberry and from dark spice to grilled herb. There's an impressive sense of harmony on the bouquet. The mouthfeel is slightly more abrupt and crisp with a clear streak of acidity that is so characteristic of Sangiovese. That zesty crispness makes this an excellent choice to pair with a hearty Tuscan meal.”Wine Advocate 91 points

Casanova Di Neri Brunello Di Montalcino White Label 2012 Product #31981 (In Stock)
Casanova Di Neri Brunello Di Montalcino White Label 2012 Casanova Di Neri Brunello Di Montalcino White Label 2012

This is the more traditional Brunello from Casanova di Neri, aging for 40-44 months in large (used) oak cask rather than in barrique.  The fame of Tenuta Nuova often leaves this “little brother” in the shade, making it easy to overlook.  Don’t.  It’s a better wine than you’ll find in most estate’s flagship bottlings and it ages superbly.  Wine Spectator actually preferred White Label to Tenuta Nuova in 2012 for it's vibrancy and purity.  I think Tenuta Nuova shows more oak now but is probably the better bottle in the long term.  Not sure you can go wrong either way!

"Casanova di Neri is one of the shining stars of Montalcino. Each successive vintage released brings us renewed understanding of the focus and the dedication demonstrated by the father and son team that operates this estate. The winemaking style is impeccable and elaborate. There's a higher degree of texture and richness on display, and this is not often the case with Sangiovese. The 2012 Brunello di Montalcino opens to thick layers of dark fruit, mocha, spice, leather, cigar box and pipe tobacco. A distant note of dried fruit or blackberry confit adds softness and sweetness. Give this wine a few more years to flesh out and integrate."Wine Advocate 93 points

"Effusive aromas and flavors of raspberry, cherry, floral, mineral and tobacco are at the center of this linear, vibrant red. Well-structured, this offers terrific length on the sinewy finish. Best from 2020 through 2035." Wine Spectator 95 points

Voliero Brunello Di Montalcino 2011 Voliero Brunello Di Montalcino 2011

Voliero is Andrea Cortonese of Uccelliera fame’s second project, and was supposed to mostly be wine to serve at his restaurant in Siena. With someone this talented in charge, the wines couldn’t be anything less than outstanding, and word quickly spread. Now the wines from Cortonesi’s second label are so popular, he doesn’t have any left to serve at his restaurant! The 2011 Brunello opens with sappy, woodsy aromas, and is beautifully ripe and bold on the palate. If you’re looking for Brunello that doesn’t require years and years of aging, this is it.

"Big and juicy still with loads of ripe-fruit and meat undertones. Full body, velvety tannins and a long, flavorful finish. Powerful for the vintage. From the owners of Uccelliera. Drink now: Why wait?"  James Suckling 94 points

"Andrea Cortonesi's 2011 Brunello di Montalcino (from his second brand, Voliero) shows much of the winemaking detail and care that you find in his bread and butter brand, Uccelliera. The wine shows some signs of vintage ripeness. Bold cherry and blackberry aromas are followed by spice and toasted tobacco. This is a clean and focused Brunello that performs well on the all the senses. It offers soft tannins and bold fruit flavors. The style is youthful and approachable. The finish is exceptionally silky and smooth."Wine Advocate 92 points

La Gerla Brunello Di Montalcino 2011 Product #30789 (In Stock)
La Gerla Brunello Di Montalcino 2011 La Gerla Brunello Di Montalcino 2011

The 2011 La Gerla, from the warmer south of Montalcino, is a fleshy, rich, bottle of meaty, black cherry, Sangiovese yumminess.  Drink it young (now-2025) for maximum delight. Tied for second favorite in our 2011 Brunello class!

"The 2011 Brunello di Montalcino is dark, sensual and inviting. Succulent red cherry, tobacco, mint, leather, sage and licorice flesh out in a radiant, open-knit Brunello that will drink well upon release. There is a lot to like here, especially the wine's immediacy. The 2011 is not especially complex, but it is beautifully balanced and harmonious from start to finish."  Vinous (Galloni) 92 points

"Aromas of spice, bacon, smoked meat and ripe fruit follow through to a full body with round, silky tannins. Delicious finish. Sexy, opulent 2011."  James Suckling 93 points

"The 2011 Brunello di Montalcino is a compelling wine that I had the opportunity to taste at intervals several hours after opening the bottle. The wine showed a long and very interesting evolution. Moments after opening the bottle, it presented very dry aromas of pressed rose petal, red currant and dusty mineral. Hours later, the wine had gone into high gear with more articulate aromas of exotic spice and crushed clove. This fast-paced evolution leads me to believe that this vintage from La Gerla will not age as long as the excellent 2010 vintage."Wine Advocate 91 points

Lovely now and for years to come.

"Luminous red. Highly complex nose offers aromas of red cherry, raspberry, flint and violet, plus a touch of beef bouillon; this is a candidate for the most complex nose of the vintage. Then textbook Sangiovese flavors of flinty red cherries, licorice and minerals. Long and clean on the perfumed, highly mineral finish."  Vinous (D'Agata) 93+ points

"Beautifully saturated and dark, the 2012 Brunello di Montalcino offers a distinctively sophisticated personality. There's an air of nobility that is natural to Brunello, but that comes in limited supply in this warm vintage. You definitely get it here. The wine's bouquet offers a compelling medley of dark fruit tones that shift into savory spicy and balsam herb. Those automatic transitions are smooth and seamless. Another nice quality of the wine is that no one element overpowers or overshadows the other. It offers a great sense of balance. This wine has many cards to play and I am confident it will play them well over the next ten years of its evolution."Wine Advocate 94 points

Casanova Di Neri Brunello Tenuta Nuova 2012 Product #31982 (In Stock)
Casanova Di Neri Brunello Tenuta Nuova 2012 Casanova Di Neri Brunello Tenuta Nuova 2012

As Monica Learner has written in Wine Advocate, this was the wine that launched the concept of “Modern” Brunello – ultra-ripe, dense, wines clearly marked by the influence of small French oak barrels.  The wood can be a bit overwhelming when the wine is young – showing as smoke, chocolate and vanilla – but melds into the wine nicely by 7-8 years from the vintage.  It’s been Wine Spectator’s Wine of the Year (in 2006) and made the Top 100 two other times (2000 and 2011).  And while the 96 point 2012 isn't at the same level as the Wine Advocate 100 point 2010, this the most highly rated vintage for Tenuta Nuova ever aside from that perfect harvest.  You can decant and taste now, but the real excitement starts from 2020 - 2027.

"Lots of spice, balsamic and ripe-fruit character to this one. Walnut undertones. Full to medium body, a compressed structure of ripe tannins and packed-in fruit. Vibrant finish. Best in 2019."  James Suckling 96 points

"The Casanova di Neri 2012 Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova is a beautiful wine that recalls many of the stunning characteristics found in its high-scoring predecessor. I gave a perfect 100 points to the 2010 edition of this same wine. This expression, made two years later, continues in that tradition of excellence. The quality of fruit is profound and intense. The bouquet offers black cherry, spice, leather, balsam herb, cola and licorice. The complexity is absolutely impressive. This remains one Bellissimo Brunello."Wine Advocate 96 points
