Collemattoni Toscana Adone Rosso 2015 Product #32952 (In Stock)
Collemattoni Toscana Adone Rosso 2015 Collemattoni Toscana Adone Rosso 2015

We loved Collemattoni's 96 point Brunello di Montalcino 2012, but - truth be told - we probably liked this vibrant Toscana Rosso even more!  It's a blend of 95% Sangiovese from in and around the Brunello zone plus 5% Merlot for extra plumpness and depth.  Pretty aromas of violets, cherry and blackberry lead to a rich and zesty palate with good breadth and richness and a fine, food-friendly, finish.  A fine pizza/pasta red with the extra heft to handle a good steak, too.

"Fresh and fruity red with sliced lemon and chocolate character. Medium body. Firm finish."  James Suckling 90 points

San Crispino Chianti Classico 2014 Product #31790 (In Stock)
San Crispino Chianti Classico 2014 San Crispino Chianti Classico 2014

Proof that not all Chianti Classico is "serious" - although this is seriously fun to drink!  It's 100% Sangiovese from the best part of the Chianti zone with minimal wood influence.  It's bursting with juicy black cherry fruit with just a touch of earthy/leathery accents and spice. Really pumps out generous fruit over nicely grippy tannins.  An excellent value for pizza and pasta.

Colsanto Ruris Umbria 2014 Product #33140 (In Stock)
Colsanto Ruris Umbria 2014 Colsanto Ruris Umbria 2014

Here's our single best-selling Italian wine of the past five years - a fantastic value that tastes like it costs twice as much as it does. The wine is mainly (70%) Sangiovese and delivers plenty of that variety's juicy black cherry fruit. But, the 20% Merlot in the blend rounds out the mid-palate and keeps the wine soft while the secret ingredient -- 10% Sagrantino -- adds spice and complexity uncommon in Umbrian wines. Sure, it goes well with pizza and robust pasta sauces, but there's enough going on to handle game and hard, salty, cheeses and a soft enough finish just to drink at a party. Fantastic value.

Poggio Alloro Chianti DOCG 2015 Product #31858 (In Stock)
Poggio Alloro Chianti DOCG 2015 Poggio Alloro Chianti DOCG 2015

Here’s proof that great farming and straight-ahead winemaking can deliver fine Chianti – and even finer value! – from outside the Classico zone.  More and more Chianti is either all Sangiovese or Sangiovese strengthened with dollops of Cabernet or Syrah.  Here, a family dedicated to natural, organic, farming turns back to Tuscan tradition to make Chianti from an old-school blend of grapes:  Sangiovese, Canaiolo, Colorino and Ciliegiolo.  Sangiovese gives the wine heft and structure, while Canaiolo adds volume, Colorino deepens the color, and Ciliegiolo – Sangiovese’s genetic parent – soft red cherry fruit.

In the fantastic 2015 vintage, all of this comes together to deliver a ripe, zesty, Chianti that’s very easy to drink.  Ripe black and red cherry fruit forms the wine’s core and gains interest and complexity from accents of crushed violets, red licorice, rich earth, and sweet spice accents.  There’s no oak influence at all, allowing the ripe fruit to shine through while retaining outstanding freshness and just the right touch of structure at the end.  A fine party Chianti, for sure, and one that will be as much fun to drink with a big bowl of pasta as with burgers or rosemary-scented pork.

Dievole Le Due Arbie Chianti Superiore 2015 Product #32689 (In Stock)

Having re-established their mastery of Chianti Classico, this old Tuscan house is now offering a fresher, younger, bottling for easy drinking anytime.  It's a blend of Sangiovese and Merlot (about 20%) from vineyards just outside the Classico zone aged in large cask for 12 months. The wine's delicious, with hearty black cherry, chocolate and herb notes and a nicely plush, friendly, texture.  Just enough tannin to hold up to food and plenty of dark, chocolaty, richness lingering.  Fun!

Perticaia Umbria Rosso 2016 Product #32940 (In Stock)

From the relatively young estate of Perticaia, created as a "retirement" gig by old Tuscan hand Guido Guardigli comes this delicious, goes-with-everything red.  He launched this new estate with his family in land-locked Umbria, naming it for the dialect word for "plow" - and just as the plow helped Umbria to prosperity by transforming from a grazing to farming region, Guido hopes his estate will "open the earth" to exciting new wines.

His entry-level red is a joy, fresh and fruity with deep aromas and flavors of black cherry, juicy raspberry, and a dash of sweet spice.  Sangiovese (80%) provides the core of fruit and a zesty structure while Colorino and Merlot (10% each) soften up the finish and add top- and base-notes, respectively.  A great pizza/salami/grilled sausage wine that gets richer and more intensely fruited with air or brighter and fresher with a light chill.  Much more interesting than 90% of wine labeled “Chianti” at this price!

Torre A Cona Chianti Colli Fiorentini 2015 Product #33150 (In Stock)

Our first reaction on tasting this ripe and luscious 2015?  Tasted like GREAT $25 Chianti to us...just much less expensive.  It comes from vines about 10km outside Florence, a blend of Sangiovese and Colorino with about 30% aging in wood for 8 months.  This 2015 is the best ever here, just missing Gambero Rosso Tre Bicchieri status (it earned "Two Glasses, Red" meaning a finalist for the big prize).  Full of bold black cherry and raspberry fruit with a lovely floral perfume that starts on entry and lingers over the fine-grained tannins.  A juicy, mouthwatering, wine with excellent fruit makes a zesty sipper and great companion for pizza, red sauce and burgers.

Montenidoli Chianti Colli Senesi Il Garrulo 2015 Product #33084 (In Stock)

Throw-back Chianti here following the original recipe created by Barone Ricasoli:  two red grapes (Sangiovese and Canaiolo) and two white (Trebbiano and Malvasia Bianca) all fermented together and aged in old oak casks.  With some of the red grapes air dried before fermentation, this shows off an old-school aroma and flavor profile, too, with roasted cherry and strawberry fruit and earthy complexity.  The texture is superb, with a velvet mid-palate and lightly chalky, food-friendly, finish. Very highly recommended now - 2025+

This could almost be labeled Chianti Classico (and actually has some declassified Chianti juice in it), but with just 65% Sangiovese, it's a tad under the minimum.  The 35% other grapes - mainly Merlot and Canaiolo - soften Sangiovese's bite and add a nice layer of richness and depth to this all tank blend.  Dark cherry and bitter chocolate aromas and flavors get a nice lift from lemony acidity and fresh, juicy, raspberry.  There's enough structure and weight to make this a great table wine but it's supple enough to just sip, too.

Castellare Chianti Classico 2015 Product #32790 (In Stock)

Deliciously rich and nicely textured with a long, generous, finsih.

"You absolutely can't go wrong with a strong and food-friendly wine like this. The 2015 Chianti Classico (95% Sangiovese and 5% Canaiolo) is not a particularly complex wine, but it does deliver on other levels. It shows beautiful color saturation and a robust appearance that denotes texture and extraction. The bouquet is luscious and lively with dark cherry, blackberry preserve, oak spice and toast."Wine Advocate 90 points

Voliero Rosso Di Montalcino 2015 Product #32382 (In Stock)
Voliero Rosso Di Montalcino 2015 Voliero Rosso Di Montalcino 2015

We sometimes think of Rosso di Montalcino as "baby Brunello," and some winemakers craft their Rosso in that style:  rich, dark, powerful and structured if just a touch less deep than Brunello.  But Andrea Cortonesi’s Voliero Rosso di Montalcino 2015 is something different.  It certainly captures the dark fruit and layered complexity of Sangiovese Grosso grown in the sandier soils of Montalino's norther vineyards.  But this is no "almost Brunello" - instead, it's a wine of unique purity, grace and even finesse that is uniquely Rosso.

It's also really, really, delicious!  Aromas of crushed berries, violets, spice and fresh leather all waft from the glass with the fruit getting darker and more prominent with air. In the mouth it glides across your palate with beautifully purity and deftness, layering fresh raspberry and cherry fruit with floral, spice and fresh earth accents. On the finish, the sweet fruit keeps on singing out over very fine, ripe, tannins and tangy cherry juice acidity.  Although the aromas and flavors are very Montalcino, the texture and freshness resemble a top Willamette Valley Pinot Noir, and this will work like that with salmon, grilled beef, and mushroom dishes.

Topline:  this is one delicious Sangiovese!  Brunello grower Livio Sassetti works this small farm in Tuscany's Maremma district, between Montalcino and Morellino di Scansano.  It's 100% Sangiovese (all organically farmed) and in 2015 is explosively ripe on the nose and sweetly fruited on the palate.  Black cherry, violets and subtle leather notes weave in and out of a generous red that fills your mouth and then finishes up with a whip of steak-friendly tannin.  A treat!

Montenidoli Toscana Rosso Sono Montenidoli 2015 Product #32932 (In Stock)
Montenidoli Toscana Rosso Sono Montenidoli 2015 Montenidoli Toscana Rosso Sono Montenidoli 2015

One of Tuscany's most famed estates - but only in Italy and mainly among the lucky few who met the late Sergio Muratori and Elisabetta Fagiuoli, Sergio's very much alive cofounder and creator of Montenidoli in the Chianti hills not far from San Gimignano.  The 24ha acres of vines are nestled into 250ha of woodlands, rising from ancient seabed soils at the base to blood-red, iron-rich, remnants of the Triassic period at the top of the hill.  These are the oldest soils in Tuscany and the only place they are planted to vine.

Elisabetta's Sangiovese grows naturally (only a little copper or sulfur as needed) in the poor red soils, ripening stunning cherry and strawberry fruit flavors while sucking up and sharing layer up on layer of iron ore minerality.  Aging a year in neutral oak gives the wine some roundness, but the tannins here are still classically firm and mouthcoating - the kind of big mouthful of tannin that's satisfying and mouthwatering, not hard or bitter.  The wine's delicious and rare and priced far, far, below its value.  Try it.

"A tangy and fresh red with plum, dried lemon and berry character. Medium body, bright fruit and a fruity finish."  James Suckling 91 points

"This wine offers excellent value and with 160,000 bottles produced, it should be easy to find. The 2014 Chianti Classico is 80% Sangiovese, 15% Canaiolo and 5% Syrah, aged in small and large oak barrels for one year. It offers beautifully polished and fine aromas of wild berry, toasted almond, grilled herb and blue violet. Compared to its peers from this difficult vintage, this wine offers noticeably more definition and depth."Wine Advocate 90 points

Castello La Leccia Chianti Classico Riserva Giuliano 2013 Product #32013 (In Stock)
Castello La Leccia Chianti Classico Riserva Giuliano 2013 Castello La Leccia Chianti Classico Riserva Giuliano 2013

Full confession – we’re not normally fans of Italian “Riserva” wines.  Even though most use the estate’s best fruit, the extra time in oak (up to a year) often dries the wine out, kills the fruit, and gives sticky, drying, tannins that rob the wines of all their fun.  Here, though, we have a Chianti Classico Riserva that soars above the norm in every way!

Francesco Daddi made the first vintage in 2012 in honor of his father, Giuland.  It’s built on the estate’s best Sangiovese plus a splash of Malvasia Nero – a favorite blend of Giuland’s – and given 18 months in French oak followed by extra time in concrete tank and bottle.  The aromas are sexy and sophisticated, with deep cherry/berry fruit framed by notes of fresh earth, sweet spice, and light herb.  There’s a ton going on in your mouth, but the bold burst of black raspberry fruit pulses through the layers of tobacco, spice, smoke and fresh flower flavors.  The fruit keeps on pumping through the long, complex, and firm finish in a wine that has the structure to age a decade and shine now with rich, dry-aged, beef.

Vintage 2015 is going to be a great Brunello vintage - and it's already a terrific year for Rosso di Montalcino!  This one is a beauty, very Brunello in flavor - dark cherry, leather, spice, a hint of balsamic - but with the immediate acceisbility to be fun to drink tonight.  Highly recommended!

"There is plenty of tobacco and cedar to this Rosso di Montalcino as well as ripe strawberries and hints of herbs. Full body, round tannins and an intense finish."  James Suckling 91 points

It's amazing that this small (15 hectare) estate can make such great wines and still stay under the radar of point-chasing collectors. The 2012 is open and sleek but lacking nothing in power and depth.

"Bright red. Delicate strawberry and minerals on the nose. Then fresh and juicy, with vibrat acidity lifting the bright red berry and floral flavors. Finishes long with zingy acid bite and a lovely floral quality."  Vinous 90 points

Altesino Brunello Di Montalcino 2013 Product #33026 (In Stock)

Decant now or drink through 2023.

"A wealth of ripe fruit with spice, orange peel and cherry. Full body, fine tannins and a bright and vivid finish. Drink in 2021."  James Suckling 94 points

"The 2013 Brunello di Montalcino is absolutely unique in terms of its aromatic display. To me, the nose is particularly beautiful because I have a preference for balsamic notes of cola, mint or medicinal herb (that may not be to everyone's liking). You get those in spades here. These aromas are often more prominent in cooler vintages like 2013 in the Brunello appellation. In this case, they resemble intense eucalyptus. There is subtle fruit at the back, with wild berry and plum. The mouthfeel here is absolutely silky, fresh and streamlined. It is stitched finely together like lace. I am curious to see how a wine like this ages and whether the aromas hold tight or eventually fall flat. I would suggest a slightly shorter drinking window. But for now, this is my kind of Brunello. Bottoms up!"Wine Advocate 94 points

Casanova Di Neri Brunello "White Label" 2013 Product #33029 (In Stock)

"This is a typical 2013 with a sweetness of fruit and plums. Citrus undertones. Medium to full body, ultra-fine tannins and a lively finish. Drink or hold."  James Suckling 93 points

"It's that time of year: get your Neri on. This blockbuster Montalcino estate has released another fantastic collection of new wines, including the 2013 Brunello di Montalcino. Beautifully executed, the wine oozes forth from the glass with round, supple and velvety fruit. This Brunello Annata is luscious and deep, with millefoglie aromatic layering that peels back slowly and carefully. The mouthfeel is less elaborate compared to the estate's top expressions, but the bouquet does much to push this score into the low nineties."Wine Advocate 93 points
