Boekenhoutskloof Wolftrap Red 2015 Boekenhoutskloof Wolftrap Red 2015

You can pay attention to the "South Africa" designation or not as you please.  The wine speaks a global language:  YUM.  Rich, soft, and wide open, this finishes with a hint of smoke that cries out for grilled or roasted foods.  Fun stuff.

"A soft, friendly style, with a lightly toasty shell around a core of gentle plum, white pepper and melted red licorice notes. The fruit lingers well. A crowd-pleaser."Wine Spectator 88 points

Kangarilla Road Shiraz Mclaren Vale 2013 Product #31653 (In Stock)
Kangarilla Road Shiraz Mclaren Vale 2013 Kangarilla Road Shiraz Mclaren Vale 2013

The late 2000s were a tough time for Australian wine growers, with wildly dry weather and a collapse in US demand for thick, jammy, over-the-top, Shiraz driving one winery failure after another.  Winemakers like Kangarilla Road's Kevin O'Brian who survived the crisis emerged with a new appreciation for wines that showcased Australia's rich, ripe, fruit in a more balanced, fresh, and even elegant style - in short, wines built for drinking rather than just showing well in competitions.

And McLaren Vale is one of the best regions in Australia for making this transition successfully.  Unlike baking hot Barossa further inland, the Vale lies just off Australia's western coast.  There's still plenty of sunshine and warmth, but it's balanced by cooling breezes and a bit of nighttime chill that locks in flavor and freshness.  In the fine 2013 vintage, Kevin captured the "new" McLaren Vale style perfectly in a 100% Syrah red loaded with red and black fruit, a hint of smoked meat, and pretty accents of licorice and spice.  Great with a steak, for sure, but also fine drinking while the coals are still warming up.

"Medium to deep garnet/purple, the 2013 Shiraz Estate has pretty aromas of black and red cherries plus cloves notes with hints of eucalyptus and lavender. Medium to full-bodied, it has nice freshness, good intensity and grainy, firm tannins. It finishes long."Wine Advocate 90 points

Dom Du Tix Ventoux Cuvee De Bramefan 2014 Product #31234 (In Stock)
Dom Du Tix Ventoux Cuvee De Bramefan 2014 Dom Du Tix Ventoux Cuvee De Bramefan 2014

As Wine Advocate said in their 90+ point review of the 2013 Tix Bramefan, "Readers need to put Domaine du Tix at the top of their list of new estates from Ventoux to watch out for."  The 2014 is a luxurious blend of 95% Syrah and 5% Grenache all aged in barrel and tank for smoky, plush, richness.  It's loaded with blackberry, spiced meat, fresh herb, and cracked black pepper aromas and flavors and finishes firm and fresh.  This is delicious right now especially with lamb or pepper-crusted beef but hold some back a few years and let it really unwind.  Delicious stuff.

The softer, more immediately-appealing, version of David Clarke's award-winning Thorn-Clark wines. Big, bold, and loaded with earthy fruit and spice.

Dom Des Pierres Seches Ardeche Syrah 2014 Product #30927 (In Stock)
Dom Des Pierres Seches Ardeche Syrah 2014 Dom Des Pierres Seches Ardeche Syrah 2014

A sneaky fine Syrah from Ardeche, the catch-all appellation surrounding the Northern Rhone.  Pop and pour and you'll find a juicy, ripe, and very fun bistro red, a wine showing the fruitiness and texture of a good Beaujolais with a touch of Crozes-Hermitage Syrah violet and black fruit.  Fresh and fun at first, give this some time in decanter and it takes on weight and loads of meaty, smoky, stony Syrah character emerges to complement the blueberry/blackberry fruit.  Either way, it's a lot of wine and loaded with food-friendly character at a very attractive price.

Dom Du Tix Ventoux Cuvee De Bramefan 2012 Product #30123 (In Stock)
Dom Du Tix Ventoux Cuvee De Bramefan 2012 Dom Du Tix Ventoux Cuvee De Bramefan 2012

The past two vintages of this oak-aged powerhouse Syrah (92%) and Grenache (8%) blend earned 90 points from Robert Parker and The Wine Advocate.  The 2012 is better still.  It opens with simply gorgeous aromas of crème de cassis, kirsch, smoke, and roasted meat - complex and seductive.  On the palate, Parker's description of the 2010 is spot on:  "It possesses unbelievable richness for a wine from this appellation, as well as loads of blackberries, black currants, acacia flowers, licorice and graphite."  One of the sexiest wines I've ever tried from Ventoux, but one that has sneaky structure and glorious freshness as well.  Ready and delicious right now and built to improve over the next 5-6 years.  A "wow" wine and stellar value.

Jonata The Paring Syrah 2013 Product #31797 (In Stock)
Jonata The Paring Syrah 2013 Jonata The Paring Syrah 2013

Not really sure how much we need to say beyond Antonio Galloni’s review.  This is a stunning Syrah that includes a nice slug of whole cluster wine (for structure) and a dash of Viognier (for perfume), all grown in some of the finest Syrah vineyards in Santa Barbara’s Santa Ynez Valley.  There’s certainly plenty of size and volume here – it’s a hot growing area, after all.  But we were impressed by the freshness and balance and the way the deep blue/black fruit gets lifted by notes of fresh herb, smoked meat, and a touch of whole cluster spice.  Delicious now and just getting better through 2023.  A winner.

"Another huge overachiever, the 2013 Syrah hits the palate with an exotic mélange of varietal inky fruit, violets, lavender and sage, all with an extra kick of pulsating energy and salinity that the 2012 doesn't have. A touch of Viognier and a small amount of stem inclusion add to the wine's upper register. This is another superb showing from The Paring."  Vinous (Galloni) 91 points

Vincent Paris St Joseph Les Cotes 2015 Product #31682 (In Stock)
Vincent Paris St Joseph Les Cotes 2015 Vincent Paris St Joseph Les Cotes 2015

The Wine Advocate review does about as much as we could to explain what this stunning, 100% Syrah, smells and tastes like.  Except we think it’s even better than what the words convey.  Ours is the lowest price you’ll find in the USA and we don’t have much (although more will come later this Spring).  If you don’t like this, then Northern Rhone Syrah just isn’t your thing.  But we think you will…

"The young Vincent Paris has turned out brilliant wines in 2015 that readers to need to snatch up. In addition to his Cornas releases, Paris releases a terrific St Joseph. The inky black-colored 2015 Saint Joseph les Côtes was completely destemmed and aged in a mix of tank and barrels. It offers a gorgeous perfume of violets, black and blue fruits, pepper and hints of mint in a full-bodied, layered and elegant style. The tannin quality here is beautiful, it has top-notch purity and a great finish."Wine Advocate 92 points

Dom Des Pierres Seches St Joseph 2014 Product #30928 (In Stock)
Dom Des Pierres Seches St Joseph 2014 Dom Des Pierres Seches St Joseph 2014

Sylvain Gauthier is a young winemaker to watch in the Northern Rhone.  Born in Lorraine, trained in Burgundy, and since 2007, making his own wines from Syrah in and around the Northern Rhone.  As far as we can tell, Olivier Daubresse is the first to import Sylvain's wines to the US, but the Wine Advocate managed to track down a bottle of the 2013 St Joseph last year and awarded it a very nice 90 point rating.

From the cooler 2014 vintage, this is a ripe but elegant take on St Joseph Syrah, with a nice touch of barrel for complexity and richness.  Ripe black berry and plum scents gain complexity from notes of roasted meat, smoked stone, and spicy oak.  Plenty of depth and richness here, but no excess weight and outstanding freshness through the long, mouthwatering, lip smacking, finish.  Enjoy right now with grilled lamb and keep some to continue to enjoy for another 4-8 years as it gains complexity and earthy depth.

Kangarilla Road Shiraz Alluvial Fans 2012 Product #31654 (In Stock)
Kangarilla Road Shiraz Alluvial Fans 2012 Kangarilla Road Shiraz Alluvial Fans 2012

Limited!  One of the key drivers in McLaren Vale's renewal after the great Shiraz collapse of the late 2000s was, of all things, a map.  As Lisa Perrotti-Brown explains in The Wine Advocate, “In July 2010, after decades of research performed by curious geologists, a detailed Geology Map of the entire McLaren Vale wine region - GDA 94 - was unveiled. A simple peek at what-lies-beneath revealed an astonishing truth to the local winemakers: that there was an undeniable link between marked geological variations in McLaren Vale and notable differences in the characters of the wines that the varying areas produced.”

Kangarilla Road’s Kevin O’Brian and his fellow winemakers created the Scarce Earth wine series to showcase how Shiraz performs on the Vale’s amazingly diverse soils.  His 2012 contribution comes from vines planted in the 1970s on ancient alluvial soils. Here, Shiraz shows more aromatic intensity and distinct notes of tar and earth.  It’s wonderfully lush and rich, but stays impeccably balanced and fresh through the very, very, long finish.

"Deep garnet/purple, the 2012 Alluvial Fans Shiraz (Scarce Earth) reveals attractive aromas of cassis, dark chocolate, black pepper, asphalt, tar and earth. Elegant on the medium to full-bodied palate, it has velvety smooth tannins, tons of fruit and earth flavors and a long finish."Wine Advocate 93 points

Arnot-roberts Syrah Sonoma Coast 2014 Product #30903 (In Stock)
Arnot-roberts Syrah Sonoma Coast 2014 Arnot-roberts Syrah Sonoma Coast 2014

"The 2014 Syrah North Coast is quite possibly the single best wine in the Arnot-Roberts range this year when it comes to quality and price. Pliant, expressive and giving, the 2014 possesses notable depth and intensity. Lavender, sage, menthol, blue/purplish fruit, licorice and graphite meld into the rich, textured finish. The 2014 was done with 100% whole clusters, but that does not take away from the wine's immediacy and sheer deliciousness, even at this early stage. Duncan Arnot and Nathan Roberts have chosen to focus on Sonoma Coast sites, many of which are bottled separately by many other producers, including Solas, Baker Lane, Clary Ranch, Que Syrah and Griffin's Lair, which is why this wine is now labeled Sonoma Coast (previously it was North Coast)."  Vinous (Galloni) 92 points

Amalie Robert Syrah Satisfaction 2011 Product #30997 (In Stock)
Amalie Robert Syrah Satisfaction 2011 Amalie Robert Syrah Satisfaction 2011

Yes, wonderfully elegant and very Northern Rhone-style Syrah from the southern Willamette Valley.  Remarkable stuff.

"The 2011 Syrah Satisfaction includes 50% whole-cluster fruit of four Rhône clones (plus a touch of co-planté Viognier vines). Not picked until November 14, it has an attractive bouquet with macerated red cherries, Provençal herbs, juniper berries and a touch of melted wax. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe red berry fruit mixed with blueberry, Seville orange marmalade and a healthy pinch of white pepper lending the finish that Rhône "vibe." Very linear at the moment, the finish is quite tight. I would actually cellar this for one or two years as it should repay handsomely."Wine Advocate 91 points

Guigal Cote Rotie Brune Et Blonde 2012 Product #31252 (In Stock)
Guigal Cote Rotie Brune Et Blonde 2012 Guigal Cote Rotie Brune Et Blonde 2012

A Syrah classic that's delicious now with a little air and will improve for 15 years or more.

"Raised in 50% new oak for 18 months. Saturated ruby. A highly perfumed bouquet evokes black and blue fruit liqueur, incense and fresh flowers, and notes of smoky minerals, vanilla and licorice adds complexity. Coats the palate with sweet cherry-vanilla and blueberry flavors given lift and cut by zesty acidity and a hint of cracked pepper. Finishes on a gently tannic note, showing excellent lift and floral-driven tenacity."  Vinous (Raynolds) 93 points

"The 2012 Cote Rotie Brune et Blonde has a complex, pure, medium to full-bodied feel in its cassis, black raspberry, olive and spice-laced bouquet. Possessing sweet tannin, plenty of fruit and a great finish, it has plenty of similarities to the 2011 and is joy to drink. Enjoy this pleasure-bent effort over the coming decade."Wine Advocate 91-93 points

"This offers a distinctive set of alder and olive aromas before giving way to a slightly taut core of bitter cherry, plum and red currant fruit. Lovely bay and leather accents hang on the background, leading to a long, grippy finish that exudes a slightly perfumy sandalwood note. Best from 2017 through 2027."Wine Spectator 92 points

Guigal Saint Joseph Vignes de L'Hospice 2012 Product #31326 (In Stock)
Guigal Saint Joseph Vignes de L'Hospice 2012 Guigal Saint Joseph Vignes de L'Hospice 2012

Stunning already and built to improve for a decade plus.

"Potent black and blue fruit aromas show excellent clarity, picking up smoky mineral, star anise and pipe tobacco qualities with aeration. Sweet and expansive on the palate, offering hefty blueberry and bitter cherry flavors that are given lift and spine by juicy acidity. Packs a serious punch but comes off as lithe and precise, finishing with silky tannins, building florality and outstanding persistence."  Vinous (Raynolds) 93 points

"The first vintage bottled with the new label, the 2012 St Joseph Vignes des Hospices is already approachable and drinking beautifully. Its healthy ruby/purple color is followed by pretty, medium to full-bodied aromas and flavors of cassis, black raspberries, chocolate and spring flowers. Medium to full-bodied, forward, beautifully textured and even a touch sexy, it can be enjoyed anytime over the coming 10-15 years."Wine Advocate 93 points

"This is not shy, with a dark licorice and warm ganache frame, melding wonderfully with the core of blackberry and fig confiture flavors. The finish lets a Turkish coffee note roll through. The fruit and grip remain in lockstep. Best from 2016 through 2023. 60 cases imported."Wine Spectator 94 points
