Cellars Unio Perlat Syrah 2014 Product #32525 (In Stock)

Not the fanciest of wines, but a good example of what Syrah does on the cracked slate hills of Spain's Montsant region.  Normally used to blend with Garnacha and Carignan, here it shines on its own with fine ripness and fruit tempered by 12 months in neutral oak.

"Vivid ruby. Aromas of dried cherry, cassis and licorice, plus a hint of smokiness in the background. Gently sweet black and blue fruit flavors are enlivened by a peppery element that builds as the wine opens up. Closes on a bitter note, with dusty tannins adding grip and a slightly stern edge."  Vinous (Raynolds) 87 points

The softer, more immediately-appealing, version of David Clarke's award-winning Thorn-Clark wines. Big, bold, and loaded with earthy fruit and spice.

Dom Des Pierres Seches Ardeche Syrah 2014 Product #30927 (In Stock)
Dom Des Pierres Seches Ardeche Syrah 2014 Dom Des Pierres Seches Ardeche Syrah 2014

A sneaky fine Syrah from Ardeche, the catch-all appellation surrounding the Northern Rhone.  Pop and pour and you'll find a juicy, ripe, and very fun bistro red, a wine showing the fruitiness and texture of a good Beaujolais with a touch of Crozes-Hermitage Syrah violet and black fruit.  Fresh and fun at first, give this some time in decanter and it takes on weight and loads of meaty, smoky, stony Syrah character emerges to complement the blueberry/blackberry fruit.  Either way, it's a lot of wine and loaded with food-friendly character at a very attractive price.

Torbreck Woodcutter's Shiraz Barossa Valley 2015 Product #32451 (In Stock)
Torbreck Woodcutter's Shiraz Barossa Valley 2015 Torbreck Woodcutter's Shiraz Barossa Valley 2015

Rich, velvety and wonderfully smooth, this is the place to start – or re-start – your appreciation of the magic of Barossa Shiraz.  It's 100% Syrah from vineyards scattered across Barossa, all pruned, tended, and harvested by hand to ensure only the best grapes make it into the wine.  Fermented in a mix of cement, steel, and wood vats, the wine ages for 12 months in a mix of hogsheads and French oak foudres, all well-seasoned to avoid overwhelming the wine with wood.  Yes it's big, rich, and loaded with dark berry and plum fruit with classic Shiraz accents of spice and dark chocolate.  But it's also perfectly balanced and poised, a wine that's fun to drink solo but with the complexity and character needed for further aging and food.

"A beautiful expression of shiraz from Barossa with a freshness and linear length to it. Medium to full body, fine and intense. Spice and meat character is all here." James Suckling 93 points

"Plum, licorice and cigar box notes are inviting and plush, with nutmeg and cedar accents. Firms up on the finish, where a chai tea detail crescendos. Drink now through 2030."Wine Spectator 91 points

Dom Des Pierres Seches St Joseph 2014 Product #30928 (In Stock)
Dom Des Pierres Seches St Joseph 2014 Dom Des Pierres Seches St Joseph 2014

Sylvain Gauthier is a young winemaker to watch in the Northern Rhone.  Born in Lorraine, trained in Burgundy, and since 2007, making his own wines from Syrah in and around the Northern Rhone.  As far as we can tell, Olivier Daubresse is the first to import Sylvain's wines to the US, but the Wine Advocate managed to track down a bottle of the 2013 St Joseph last year and awarded it a very nice 90 point rating.

From the cooler 2014 vintage, this is a ripe but elegant take on St Joseph Syrah, with a nice touch of barrel for complexity and richness.  Ripe black berry and plum scents gain complexity from notes of roasted meat, smoked stone, and spicy oak.  Plenty of depth and richness here, but no excess weight and outstanding freshness through the long, mouthwatering, lip smacking, finish.  Enjoy right now with grilled lamb and keep some to continue to enjoy for another 4-8 years as it gains complexity and earthy depth.

Amalie Robert Syrah Satisfaction 2011 Product #30997 (In Stock)
Amalie Robert Syrah Satisfaction 2011 Amalie Robert Syrah Satisfaction 2011

Yes, wonderfully elegant and very Northern Rhone-style Syrah from the southern Willamette Valley.  Remarkable stuff.

"The 2011 Syrah Satisfaction includes 50% whole-cluster fruit of four Rhône clones (plus a touch of co-planté Viognier vines). Not picked until November 14, it has an attractive bouquet with macerated red cherries, Provençal herbs, juniper berries and a touch of melted wax. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe red berry fruit mixed with blueberry, Seville orange marmalade and a healthy pinch of white pepper lending the finish that Rhône "vibe." Very linear at the moment, the finish is quite tight. I would actually cellar this for one or two years as it should repay handsomely."Wine Advocate 91 points

Torbreck Shiraz The Struie Barossa Valley 2015 Product #32492 (In Stock)
Torbreck Shiraz The Struie Barossa Valley 2015 Torbreck Shiraz The Struie Barossa Valley 2015

It's hard to remember that Australia's premier white wine region - Eden Valley, famous for sizzling dry Riesling - lies within the Barossa Valley.  At sites of 400-500 meters elevation, it's a great place to grow a different kind of Shiraz, one that delivers plenty of bold fruit but also a silky texture and firm structure.  The Struie blends fruit from 44 year-old Eden Valley vines with 80 year-old Barossa fruit and ages 18 months in new and used French oak.  The aromas here are exciting as is the deeply textured dark fruit.

"Lots of soy, stone, iodine and oyster shell with blue and black fruits. Full to medium body, firm and silky tannins and a juicy and long finish. The quarter of Eden gives this complexity and length. Drink now." James Suckling 95 points

"Fresh-roasted coffee, chicory and cedar notes set the stage for robust flavors of plum and cherry, accented by clove, vanilla and cola details on the finish. The tannins are thick and velvety but never get in the way of the flavors. Shiraz. Drink now through 2029. 600 cases made."Wine Spectator 92 points

Ledge James Berry Vynd Syrah 2014 Product #32422 (In Stock)

Amazing elegance and purity in a wine with lovely California fruit and lots of Cote Rotie style.

"An explosively perfumed, complex bouquet displays intense boysenberry, cherry liqueur, licorice, allspice and sandalwood scents, while a smoky mineral topnote gains strength with air. Completely stains the palate with sweet black and blue fruit, spicecake and candied lavender flavors that show impressive litheness for their heft. Smooth, slow-building tannins shape the finish, which hangs on with outstanding, floral-driven persistence."  Vinous (Raynolds) 94 points

"An upcoming estate I've been raving about for a few years now, Ledge is run by Mark Adams and he pulls fruit from his Estate Adams Ranch vineyard, as well as a number of other notable sites, including James Berry, and recently, G2 vineyard. Mark likes plenty of whole cluster, and isn't afraid of a touch of funk either. His wines always show lots of character and are highly recommended. Tasted at my office in Colorado and followed for multiple days. As from barrel, it's a dead ringer for a classic Cote Rotie and offers notes of black raspberries, cassis, olives, hints of bacon fat, liquid violets and pepper. Medium to full-bodied, concentrated, elegant and silky, it has beautiful purity of fruit, fine tannin and a great finish, all suggesting it will evolve nicely for 10-12 years."Wine Advocate 95 points

Herman Story Nuts & Bolts Syrah 2014 Product #32502 (In Stock)

Bold, rich and deep this gets close to the "over the top" line but stays on the right side of delicious.  The bottle empties frighteningly quickly...

"One of my favorite estates in the Central Coast is Russell From's Herman Story, who makes unapologetic rich, layered, flavor loaded wines that are a joy to drink. A year in, year out killer wine, the 2014 Syrah Nuts and Bolts is another stunner that gives up ripe, full throttle notes of blackberries, peppered meats, game and singed leather. Big, rich, gorgeously textured and hedonistic, yet also balanced, pure and fresh, it's a quintessential Paso Robles red that delivers the goods. Drink it anytime over the coming 5-8 years."Wine Advocate 94 points

Guigal Hermitage 2012 Product #32085 (In Stock)

"The 2012 Hermitage was bottled late last year and offers a very classic, slightly backward profile with notes of crushed rocks, black currants, graphite, chocolate and spice. It’s certainly enjoyable today, but this medium to full-bodied effort will be better in 4-5 years and drink well for a decade after that."Wine Advocate 92 points

Guigal Saint Joseph Vignes de L'Hospice 2012 Product #31326 (In Stock)
Guigal Saint Joseph Vignes de L'Hospice 2012 Guigal Saint Joseph Vignes de L'Hospice 2012

Stunning already and built to improve for a decade plus.

"Potent black and blue fruit aromas show excellent clarity, picking up smoky mineral, star anise and pipe tobacco qualities with aeration. Sweet and expansive on the palate, offering hefty blueberry and bitter cherry flavors that are given lift and spine by juicy acidity. Packs a serious punch but comes off as lithe and precise, finishing with silky tannins, building florality and outstanding persistence."  Vinous (Raynolds) 93 points

"The first vintage bottled with the new label, the 2012 St Joseph Vignes des Hospices is already approachable and drinking beautifully. Its healthy ruby/purple color is followed by pretty, medium to full-bodied aromas and flavors of cassis, black raspberries, chocolate and spring flowers. Medium to full-bodied, forward, beautifully textured and even a touch sexy, it can be enjoyed anytime over the coming 10-15 years."Wine Advocate 93 points

"This is not shy, with a dark licorice and warm ganache frame, melding wonderfully with the core of blackberry and fig confiture flavors. The finish lets a Turkish coffee note roll through. The fruit and grip remain in lockstep. Best from 2016 through 2023. 60 cases imported."Wine Spectator 94 points

Shafer Syrah Relentless 2014 Product #32659 (In Stock)

"Shafer's 2014 Relentless is fabulous. The most expressive and varietally expressive of the three vintages of Relentless I tasted. In 2014, Relentless has 11% Petite Sirah, which, along with the personality of the year, kicks up the aromatics and flavors in a meaningful way. Lavender, mint, violets and crème de cassis notes are laced into the super-expressive finish. The 2014 is shaping up to be a real gem."  Vinous (Galloni) 92-95 points

"This is very fresh and balanced with a dense and silky texture plus lots of violet, berry and hints of sandalwood. It’s full and very silky. Long and intense. Hints of smoky, spicy, wonderful fruit. Lots of tannin but shows an intensity and power. Needs time to soften, but beautiful. 89% syrah and 11% petite sirah."  James Suckling 95 points

Guigal Cote Rotie Chateau D'ampuis 2011 Product #32086 (In Stock)
Guigal Cote Rotie Chateau D'ampuis 2011 Guigal Cote Rotie Chateau D'ampuis 2011

"Vivid ruby. Spicy red fruits, incense, violet and botanical herbs on the flamboyantly perfumed nose. Vibrant, mineral-tinged black raspberry and bitter cherry flavors show impressive depth and vivacity and a seamless texture. Juicy, precise and appealingly sweet on the youthfully tannic, incisive finish, with the berry and floral notes echoing. The blend of fruit intensity and tension here is quite suave."  Vinous (Galloni) 93 points

"The 2011 Cote Rotie Chateau d’Ampuis has closed down slightly since last year, yet still offers a terrific perfume of cured meats, vanilla bean, sweet black currants and graphite to go with medium to full-bodied, ripe, sexy style on the palate. I doubt it will truly close down and would happily enjoy bottles anytime over the coming 15 or more years."Wine Advocate 93 points

"Very focused, with a lovely beam of lightly steeped red currant, bitter cherry and plum fruit flavors that glides atop singed cedar, black tea and dried star anise notes. The long finish is very fine-grained. A gorgeous wine. Best from 2016 through 2027. 400 cases imported." Wine Spectator 94 points
