Bedrock Wine Co The Whole Shebang Cuvee X NV Product #32164 (In Stock)
Bedrock Wine Co The Whole Shebang Cuvee X NV Bedrock Wine Co The Whole Shebang Cuvee X NV

As The New York Times recently wrote, "The Shebang series, moderately priced wines from Morgan Twain-Peterson’s excellent Bedrock Wine Company, offers modern versions of California field blends. This spicy, gutsy wine comes from multiple vineyards and appellations, includes many grapes (with probably a lot of zinfandel and carignan), and mixes several vintages. The result is a delicious, long-lasting red with flavors of licorice, herbs and red and black fruits."

Bedrock Wine Co Old Vine Zinfandel 2014 Product #32165 (In Stock)
Bedrock Wine Co Old Vine Zinfandel 2014 Bedrock Wine Co Old Vine Zinfandel 2014

A stunner from one of California's most important Zinfandel estates.

"The 2014 Old Vine Zinfandel is deep, rich and luscious, with plenty of up-front fruit and tons of appeal. More of a field blend than a true Zinfandel, the 2014 is soft and forward, with expressive red-fleshed fruit, bright acidity and terrific overall balance. The Old Vine is 77% Zinfandel and a generous 23% mixed blacks. Best of all, the Old Vine Zinfandel is a fabulous value."  Vinous (Galloni) 91 points

"The 2014 Zinfandel Old Vines is what Morgan Twain-Peterson calls “the gateway drug to Bedrock.” It is a cross-AVA blend of lots culled from his other wines and blended. The 2014 is largely Zinfandel, but with some obscure mixed black varietals thrown in for added complexity. It is an outstanding, full-throttle wine with a Mediterranean personality, with loads of Provençal herbs, briary black raspberry and black cherry fruits, dusty loaminess, a lush, full-bodied mouthfeel and dark ruby/purple-tinged color. Drink it over the next 3-4 years."Wine Advocate 90 points

"Plush and jammy, but well-focused, with gobs of fruit and flavors of wild berry, licorice and smoky pepper. Drink now through 2026. 5,000 cases made."Wine Spectator 91 points

Green & Red Zinfandel Chiles Canyon 2014 Product #32011 (In Stock)
Green & Red Zinfandel Chiles Canyon 2014 Green & Red Zinfandel Chiles Canyon 2014

I can't recall a better release of Green & Red's "entry level" Chiles Canyon Vyd red in years.  From old vines growing at 1,000-1,700 feet elevation to the east of Napa, there's more than enough ripeness and fleshy fruit here to delight any Zin fan.  Dark black cherry and super-ripe raspberry fruit hold center stage with a bold does of oak spice and lots of zesty structure at the end.  Big, but poised and fun - even refreshing! - to drink now.

Carlisle Zinfandel Bedrock Vyd 2014 Product #31611 (In Stock)
Carlisle Zinfandel Bedrock Vyd 2014 Carlisle Zinfandel Bedrock Vyd 2014

There’s just a little bit of American history in the ground at Bedrock. The site was first planted in 1854 by the gentlemen who would come to be known as Generals William “Tecumseh” Sherman and “Fightin’ Joe” Hooker.  After phylloxera it was replanted in 1888 by Senator George Hearst—a mining magnet, an early father of California, and the father of publisher William Randolph Hearst.

Mike Officer farms two plots of this large site.  About 90% is 1888 Zinfandel with the rest "mixed blacks" (Petite Sirah, Alicante Bouschet and others) plus a dollop of fortifying Mourvedre, also planted in 1888. The Mourvedre gives depth and a structure that will need a little time to fully unwind.  Mike recommends drinking from 2018-2028 and that seems right to us.

“The 2014 Zinfandel Bedrock Vineyard emerges from one of the warmer sites Carlisle works with. All of that intensity comes through in a big, dramatic wine endowed with serious presence, intensity and tannic heft. Black cherries, menthol, tar, licorice and smoke hit the palate in a big wine that shows the virile side of Zinfandel. The Bedrock is not especially polished, subtle or refined, but it sure is distinctive.”  Vinous (Galloni) 92-94 points

"Plump and rich flavors wrap around a big but refined structure, with briary wild berry aromas and zesty notes of smoky anise, cracked pepper and stony mineral that linger toward polished tannins. Drink now through 2028."Wine Spectator 94 points

Carlisle Zinfandel Papera Ranch 2014 Product #31612 (In Stock)
Carlisle Zinfandel Papera Ranch 2014 Carlisle Zinfandel Papera Ranch 2014

Planted in 1934 by Celestino Papera, this vineyard is unusual in that the main "mixed black" component here is Carignan (tiny amounts of Syrah, Petite Sirah and Valdiguie are present, too).  It's a cooler site, making late-ripening Carignan a curious choice.  But, as Mike says, " it seems to work, producing a powerfully elegant Zinfandel."  Already super aromatic and expressive, it’s a wine you’ll be pretty thrilled with right now although the winery suggests holding until 2019.

“The 2014 Zinfandel Papera Ranch is exuberant, rich and extroverted to the core. Sweet dark cherry, plum, mint, tobacco, cedar, menthol and spices flesh out in a hugely appealing wine endowed with real depth and intensity. The finish is perhaps a bit chunky, but there is so much to like that I can look past that slightly rustic part of the wine's personality. This historic Russian River site was planted in 1934. The blend of 96% Zinfandel and 4% Carignane is unusually high for mixed blacks vineyards planted during this period.”  Vinous (Galloni) 92-94 points

Crane Assembly El Coco Proprietary Red 2014 Product #31906 (In Stock)
Crane Assembly El Coco Proprietary Red 2014 Crane Assembly El Coco Proprietary Red 2014

"The third blend Dave Phinney and winemaker Kevin Fox are turning out is the El Coco Proprietary Blend Composition. The 2014 is 45% old vine Zinfandel, 41% Petite Sirah and 14% Merlot. There are 490 cases for this vintage. It is a spectacular wine, with an opaque purple color and a big, sweet kiss of pen ink, graphite, blackberry, blueberry and violets. Its supple, sweet tannin is amazing, and the wine builds incrementally to reveal terrific viscosity, fruit intensity and extraction, with a savory spiciness. This is a stunner to drink now and over the next 15+ years."Wine Advocate 95 points
