Ch Guiraud Sauternes 2008 375ml Product #31487 (In Stock)
Ch Guiraud Sauternes 2008 375ml Ch Guiraud Sauternes 2008 375ml

Nicely mature and very rich with a long, long, finish.

"Tasted as part of a vertical held at the chateau. It is clear that the aromatics on the 2008 are a little simpler and more straightforward than the 2007 with honeysuckle, jasmine and mango scents emerging with time. The palate is ripe and precise on the entry with well-integrated oak that is in sync with the lemon curd and apricot fruit. There is a lovely sweetness on the finish with a hint of spice lingering in the mouth. As I wrote last year – sublime."Wine Advocate 93 points

"A ripe, flashy style, with layers of creamed peach, Jonagold apple, candied citrus peel and dried apricot, all stitched with lovely acacia honey and floral notes. This has power and purity. Drink now through 2022."Wine Spectator 92 points

Dom Larue Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Les Garennes 2008 Product #32856 (In Stock)
Dom Larue Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Les Garennes 2008 Dom Larue Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Les Garennes 2008

We drank this at our January 2017 staff dinner.  The wines before and after it were far grander, but I thought it would be fun to pop this and see what time had done.  For every single staff member and guest at the table that evening, this was the wine of the night.  Until a few days ago, I wrongly assumed there was no more to be had.

But there is, and the wine is damn fine.  Les Garennes is high on the Puligny hill, a site that gives cool, restrained, balanced wines that perfectly fit Didier’s restrained, balanced, winemaking style.  At age 9, this is all about pure golden apple fruit, lemon citrus lift, toasted hazelnut complexity, and crushed rock minerality.  It starts with intense focus, expands on your palate with generous breadth, and than snaps into mouthwatering precision on the finish where French butter, ripe apple, fresh mint, and crushed chalk flavors sail on and on.  A magnificent match for shellfish, fried foods, or anything with a good dose of herb.

Bzikot Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatieres 2008 Product #23918 (In Stock)
Bzikot Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatieres 2008 Bzikot Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatieres 2008

Folatieres is the largest 1er Cru vineyard in Puligny, lying lower down on the hill to the Meaursalt side of the great Grand Crus.  While it certainly isn’t as grand as nearby Pucelles, it does share a bit of that famed 1er Cru’s power and breadth.  Here you’ll find pretty much the epitome of maturing Puligny, with bold and generous scents and flavors of ripe stone fruit – apricot, nectarine, peach – framed by a bold lash of tangy butter, toasted hazelnut, and captivating accents of fresh mint.  The wine starts off compelling at first pour and just gets better with air, adding richness of texture and a lovely dose of rich lemon custard.  Puligny’s signature minerality emerges on a finish that starts broad and rich and ends focused and clear.  A wine for lobster, scallops, truffle, and roasted fowl or just to drink with joy.

Maillard Corton Renardes Grand Cru 2008 Product #26601 (In Stock)
Maillard Corton Renardes Grand Cru 2008 Maillard Corton Renardes Grand Cru 2008

With all the fuss over the super-ripe 2009s, it's easy to miss out on the classic structure, balance, and charm of bottles like this fine Grand Cru 2008.  This year's model shows off plenty of the animal, earthy, aspect of Corton Renardes but still has a nice core of pretty Pinot fruit.  It's unusually elegant for Corton Renardes, but still packs a punch of powerful flavors and has the perfect balance of fruit, tannin and acid to develop well in cellar for a decade or more.  Or, drink it now with earthy foods and mushrooms!

Guillon Clos Vougeot Grand Cru 2008 Product #23795 (In Stock)
Guillon Clos Vougeot Grand Cru 2008 Guillon Clos Vougeot Grand Cru 2008

A classic from the largest and best-known Grand Cru vineyard in the Cote de Nuits, the walled vineyard of Vougeot.  Unlike many wines from this famous site, Guillon’s Vougeot is fully Grand Cru in quality – dark, rich, and super, super, long.  Cellar for another 5-8 years and drink for 20.

“From 40+ year old vines and whole cluster fermentation, fermented entirely in a small 100% new wood tank. As one would reasonably expect, this is much more defined aromatically by earth tones rather than fruit. Dark berry fruit aromas introduce exceptionally rich and full-bodied flavors blessed with ample dry extract levels and an opulent mouth feel yet the hugely long and slightly woody finish tightens up considerably and is quite youthfully austere despite the sap.” Allen Meadows 91-93 points
