Ch Desclau Bordeaux Superieur 2010 Ch Desclau Bordeaux Superieur 2010

Someday, all the little Bordeaux from the great 2010 harvest will be gone, but until then, the values remain superb.  Here's another, based on 40% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest Cab Franc, Malbec, and Petit Verdot.  The Verdot really shows her in notes of candied violet and rich chocolate while the Cabernets add cedar, tobacco, currant, and dark cherry notes.  Finishes firm with spice, cedar and currant lingering.  Delicious right now and will improve for another 5 years or so.

Bodegas Vinsacro Rioja Dioro 2010 Product #31693 (In Stock)
Bodegas Vinsacro Rioja Dioro 2010 Bodegas Vinsacro Rioja Dioro 2010

A delicious wine from an old-fashioned vineyard treated with loving, modern, care. A blend of Temparnillo (50%) Garnacha, Graciano, Mazuelo, Monastrel and Bobal, all planted mixed together in a 70 year-old vineyard at 450-800 meters of altitude and farmed organically.  Dioro represents the best lots from these old vines, aged 12-14 months in new French oak and then further at the winery.  A luxury, $46, wine on release, it’s very much an “affordable luxury” at these prices while it lasts.

"Bright purple. Potent dark berry aromas are complicated by notes of vanilla, pipe tobacco and woodsmoke. Fresh and precise, with densely packed black raspberry and cola flavors that opening nicely with air. Gentle tannins build slowly on the clinging finish, with the raspberry and smoke notes echoing."  Vinous (Raynolds) 91 points

"The 2010 Vinsacro Dioro opens to an explosion of flowers and ripe blueberries that is very perfumed. It feels quite modern and aromatic with well-integrated oak and a luscious palate. This is produced from a field blend they call Vidau, which, in their case it is Garnacha, Tempranillo and a myriad of other grapes like Graciano and even Monastrell. The wine aged in brand new French oak barrels, and it's clearly a high-end wine with aspirations."Wine Advocate 92 points

Ch Larose Perganson Haut Medoc 2010 Ch Larose Perganson Haut Medoc 2010

A terrific value in 2010 Bordeaux from 35 year-old vines growing on classic Bordeaux gravel soils just outside Pauillac and St. Julien. Aged in tank (15%) and oak (85%) including about 50% new French oak.  The blend is 50% Cabernet Sauvignon (for structure and power), 45% Merlot (for body and fruit) and 5% Petit Verdot (color, perfume), all from sustainably farmed 35 year-old vines.

"A wine with sweet strawberries and raspberries on the nose. Full body, with ultra-fine tannins and a delicious finish. This is balanced and savory for the vintage. And it's an environmentally sustainable winery. Better after 2016."  James Suckling 92 points

"Sports bold, modern toast, with overt anise and blueberry notes leading the way, backed by racy plum and raspberry fruit. The solid finish shows the vintage's telltale graphite spine, offering lively acidity for balance. Best from 2014 through 2020."Wine Spectator 90 points

Dense and powerful but opening nicely.

"Dark, grippy and very tarry, with lots of pebbly tannins driving underneath the layers of boysenberry, steeped fig and blackberry fruit. Ample baker's chocolate and dark tobacco fill in the remaining space. This will need a little cellaring to round into form, but remains a very solid, muscular version. Giulia Negri Barolo La Tartufaia 2010 Product #29760 (In Stock)
Giulia Negri Barolo La Tartufaia 2010 Giulia Negri Barolo La Tartufaia 2010

What happens with a top Burgundy winemaker (Jean-Michel Guillon) encourages friends and importers of wines from France (Olivier Daubresse) and Spain (Jonas Gustafsson) to import a Barolo from Italy?  When the Barolo is the stunning 2010 La Tartufaia from young Giulia Negri – aka “BaroloGirl”, something pretty magical results!

Giulia is a child of Barolo (her family owns the well-respected Serrandenari estate), and has  struck out on her own to make Chardonnay, Pinot Noir (which is how she met Jean-Michel), and a classically styled, very pure, Nebbiolo from Barolo’s great 2010 vintage.  Very pure, lifted, scents of red and black berries waft from the glass with accents of tobacco, plum, dried rose petal, and tar.  It’s nicely relaxed and pure – especially at this young age – on the palate, with juicy red/black fruits, dark chocolate, licorice, tobacco, and hints of smoky oak.  With air, a little truffle and potpourri emerge and the fruit flavors get deeper and more prominent as the wine sails on to a generous finish over sweet, ripe, tannins.  Round and rich, this tempts right now with big tannins that melt away nicely but will become more exciting and explosive from 2017 – 2025.

Amalie Robert Pinot Noir The Uncarved Block 2010 Amalie Robert Pinot Noir The Uncarved Block 2010

Ernie Pink and Dena Drews craft this lovely Pinot to tell the story of their vineyard in the vintage, blending different clones and parcels from across their 35 acre site perched above Freedom Hill.  In 2010 it's beautiful with the elegance and purity of this remarkable vintage and the open sophistication that only a little time in bottle reveals.  Lovely now and through 2020.

"Bright red. Smoky, mineral-accented black raspberry and rose oil aromas are complemented by hints of cinnamon and allspice. Gently sweet red fruit flavors are given depth by a cherry pit nuance and sharpened by juicy acidity. Silky in texture and appealingly sweet, finishing with very good clarity, subtle tannins and noteworthy spicy persistence."  Vinous (Raynolds) 91 points

Brovia Barolo Brovia 2010 Product #28991 (In Stock)
Brovia Barolo Brovia 2010 Brovia Barolo Brovia 2010

This always one of our favorite “Normale” – or “Classico” as the Brovias prefer – Barolo, tempting young and developing nicely over 3-5 years from release.  In 2010, it’s a blend of younger vines from the family’s Cru vineyards, with the biggest portion coming from the Brea vineyard in Serralunga.  It was bottled earlier than the Crus, and because of its shocked state, was not shown to critics Antonio Galloni or Steve Tanzer when they visited the estate earlier this year.  It is very fine value.

As importer Neal Rosenthal explains:  “This cuvée is a blend of the younger vines found in the various “crus” and offers a stylish take on the Brovia approach to this appellation. There is never excess here, no attempt to flaunt an image of power. Above all, balance is the key element in faithfully rendering a Barolo of great stature. You will find here the classic grainy tannins, the long, mineral-inflected finish, the aromas of late-summer roses and flavors of dried cherries.

"Brovia's 2010 Barolo opens with exquisite, floral aromatics. Silky and gracious throughout, the 2010 impresses for its overall balance and classiness. Sweet red cherries, mint, anise, cinnamon and orange peel are some of the notes that open up over time. The 2010 is a wine to treasure for its ample perfume and exceptional harmony. Today, the tannins are a bit firm, so another year or two in bottle is a must. Still, there is so much to like here, even at this early stage. The 2010 Barolo is 70% young-vine fruit from Brea (above 20 years of age), plus the wine that is left over when the single-vineyard Barolos go into cask. A recent bottle of the 2004 was stellar. This is one of the great values left in Barolo. " Antonio Galloni 92 points

"This is spicy, with meat, chocolate and dried-fruit character. Medium body, dense fruit and chewy tannins. Needs two years to soften: better in 2016."  James Suckling 91 points

A beauty right now - 2025.

"Wonderful ripe fruit with raspberries, blackberries and some eucalyptus. Excellent density and structure on palate with juicy fruit, velvety tannins and good length. Really amazing berry fruit and dense creamy mineral notes. Beautiful already now, but will improve further over the next four years [by 2017]. Best ever from here."  James Suckling 94 points

"The 2010 Dassault is a sexy, open-knit opulently styled wine that exhibits loads of raspberry and mulberry-like fruit and a sweet kiss of cherries in addition to underbrush and forest floor notes. This round, fleshy, medium to full-bodied wine is a hedonist's delight. Don't discount the wine's purity and overall equilibrium. Despite its early appeal, it should drink well for 10-15 years."Wine Advocate 91 points

"Polished, fleshy and warm, exhibiting notes of cocoa, braised fig, melted black licorice and dark currant all rolled together and backed by charcoal-coated grip that extends through the Earl Grey-tinged finish. Rock-solid and should handle cellaring nicely. Best from 2015 through 2025. 500 cases made."Wine Spectator 92 points

Amalie Robert Pinot Noir Wadenswil Clone 2010 Amalie Robert Pinot Noir Wadenswil Clone 2010

Wadenswil is Oregon's most important "heritage clone" and was the main Pinot selection across the Valley for many years.  After the winegrowers' first mad crush on Dijon clones, more and more winemakers are coming to appreciate Wadenswill's perfume and fruit-filled charm.  Just two barrels made of this beauty which is normally sold only at the winery.  We asked really nicely, but just a case or so is available.

"High-pitched cherry and Asian spice aromas are deepened by notes of sassafras, woodsmoke and cola. Stains the palate with sappy red and dark berry flavors and tangy acidity adding lift and cut. An exotic floral nuance emerges with air and carries through a long, sweet and persistent finish. While this energetic pinot is built to age, it has a lot of immediate appeal."  Vinous (Raynolds) 93 points

Clerico Barolo Pajana 2010 Product #28681 (In Stock)
Clerico Barolo Pajana 2010 Clerico Barolo Pajana 2010

Always a favorite, Pajana comes from a slightly warmer vineyard that delivers good ripeness but great acidity as well.  Very vivid and pure in 2010 with a stunning finish.

"Good medium red. Less expressive on the nose than the Briccotto, hinting at ripe, musky plum, black raspberry, menthol and tobacco. Then smooth and sweet in the mouth, but with terrific energy keeping the red fruit and tobacco flavors fresh and primary. Sweeter and more elegant in style than the 2009, but this fine-grained, firmly tannic wine really shut down in the glass. Outstanding potential here." International Wine Cellar 94(+?) points

"The 2010 Barolo Pajana is a stunning wine that shows the power and heft of the vintage. Its texture is soft and enduring with sweet almond, toasted hazelnut, bright cherry, spice and tobacco. The young tannins require more time to soften and integrate. Drink: 2017-2032." Wine Advocate 93 points

Ch Grand Puy Ducasse Pauillac 2010 Ch Grand Puy Ducasse Pauillac 2010

A stunner for now - 2025+

"This blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot is an up-front, seductively styled Pauillac (one of the more forward and evolved wines from this appellation in 2010). Deep purple, with exceptionally subtle texture and oodles of cassis fruit as well as hints of mocha and white chocolate, it is an elegant wine, but the overall impression is one of considerable flesh, fat and succulence. It will be hard to resist now, but can be cellared for another 15+ years."Wine Advocate 92 points

Ch d'Armailhac Pauillac 2010 Ch d'Armailhac Pauillac 2010

From Philippe Dhaluin of Mouton Rothschild, this is delightful now for its power and will just get better for years to come.

"Another sensational effort from Philippe Dhaluin, the administrator of Mouton Rothschild, this blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and the rest Petit Verdot shows complex floral notes intermixed with forest floor, camphor, black currants and mulberries that all jump from the glass of this aromatic style of d’Armailhac. This wine possesses very good acidity, a surprisingly higher percentage of Merlot than usual, but the quality is impressive, and the good news is that there are 20,000 cases of this full-bodied beauty, which should age nicely for 15-20+ years."Wine Advocate 93 points

"Dense, juicy and inviting, with bouncy briar, blackberry, steeped black currant and melted black licorice notes framed by roasted apple wood and graphite notes. The finish courses along with good definition. Energetic and tempting, but the gripping, iron-laden finish will benefit from cellaring. Best from 2017 through 2030."Wine Spectator 93 points

Maillard Corton Blanc Grand Cru 2010 Maillard Corton Blanc Grand Cru 2010

A top-notch, Grand Cru white Burgundy here from first sniff to last sip.  There's a touch of reduction on the nose - as there should be in a wine built to age - but also oodles of salty caramel, grilled pear, roasted hazelnut, tangy butter and crisp apple scents.  True Grand Cru size and texture here, as the wine fills your mouth and coats your palate with a lush, almost oily, texture.  On opening, the flavors are still fairly compact in this young, young, beauty but intense ripe peach and apple fruit, butter, and warm nut elements show immediately over layers of chalky mineral and fresh mint.  Give it some air, the the palate explodes with notes of nectarine, grilled pineapple, lemon curd, and even more mint joining the show.

The big, rich, texture, is perfectly balanced by bracing acidity and loads of chalky mineral on the firm, fresh, finish where a note of tangy peach and more hazelnut goes on and on.  It's amazing for a wine of this ripeness, power, and size to have so much saline, mineral, freshness - but, then, that's why it's a Grand Cru!  Let it sit for 3-4 years and enjoy for 20.

Roy Estate Proprietary Red 2010 Product #28944 (In Stock)
Roy Estate Proprietary Red 2010 Roy Estate Proprietary Red 2010

Shirley Roy never meant to make two wines from her 20 or so acre estate in a crook of Napa’s Soda Canyon.  But, winemaker Philippe Melka felt the vineyard spoke with two voices – one aristocratic and intense, the other softer, more plush and mellow.  Prop Red is the second of those voices, a blend of 71% Cabernet Sauvignon with 26% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot.  After dropping half her crop in 2010, Shirley was rewarded with this ripe and welcoming red that’s already delicious and sure to improve for years.  A bit of a cross between the black-fruited 2008 and the finer, more detailed, 2009.

“Roy’s 2010 Proprietary Red has a little more delineation and nuance than the 2009. Freshly cut flowers, violets, super ripe dark fruit, mocha, espresso, chocolate, plums, cassis and black currants all jump from the glass in this opulent full-bodied huge wine. Layers of fruit continue to build to the creamy, expressive finish.  Anticipated maturity: 2015-2025.”  Antonio Galloni, Wine Advocate 92 points

“Bright medium ruby. Aromas of blueberry, coffee, mocha, truffle and chocolate show a slightly porty quality. Fat, smooth and lush in the mouth, offering immediate accessibility. The truffley element carries through on the palate. This nicely rich, layered blend finishes with dusty tannins and good length.”International Wine Cellar 90 points

Ch Le Bon Pasteur Pomerol 2010 Ch Le Bon Pasteur Pomerol 2010

A magnificent Pomerol that will certainly develop for 20 years more, but is already delicious with a 1 hour decant.

"A fleshy, full-throttle wine with lots of mocha, kirsch, mulberry, and plum, their 2010 displays a smorgasbord of aromas, a full-bodied mouthfeel, terrific purity, density and even a hint of lead pencil shavings and subtle toasty oak. If you want to understand the genius of the Rollands, there is no better example than looking at their own wine from this property in Pomerol. The tannins are present, but not that significant, thus I tend to think the wine will come into its own in 4-5 years and last for 20 or more."Wine Advocate 95 points
