Dom Philippe Plantevin Cdr Villages Cairanne 2012 Product #32018 (In Stock)
Dom Philippe Plantevin Cdr Villages Cairanne 2012 Dom Philippe Plantevin Cdr Villages Cairanne 2012

There's nothing shy about this intense, powerful, blend of Grenache (60%) and Syrah (40%) from the warm 2012 Rhone vintage.  Bold aromas of dark black cherry, black raspberry, leather, roasted meat, and more jump from the glass.  On the palate, it's as rich and luxurious as a top-notch Chateauneuf du Pape with layered flavors of kirsch, cherry, black plum, pepper, and sweet spice.  For all its ripeness and power, the texture is sophisticated and silky with juicy acids and very fine-grained, ripe, tannins. It's the most polished and refined version of this, Philippe Plantevin's top wine, we've ever tasted.  While it will certainly delight right now with rich meals, the wine will gain even more complexity and earthy depth over the next 10+ years.

"Upfront, forward notes of sweet cassis, blackberry, wood spice and vanilla, as well as an impressively textured and layered palate. Seamless, elegant and sexy, this modern styled blend of Grenache and Syrah (aged in 20% new oak) should be ready to go on release and have 7-8 years of longevity."Wine Advocate 88-90 points

Laderas De Cabama Rioja 2012 Product #32391 (In Stock)
Laderas De Cabama Rioja 2012 Laderas De Cabama Rioja 2012

Here's a super pleasing, nicely rich, vibrant and fun Tempranillo with plenty of Rioja smoke and spice to go with ripe blackberry and red berry fruit and smooth, smoky, finish.  Seriously fun with or without food.

"The 2012 Laderas de Cabama is a fresh Tempranillo from youngish vineyards from an extremely dry vintage. It fermented in cement tanks with selected yeasts and matured in French barriques for one year. It shows contained ripeness with a nice mixture of red and black fruit with some spices. The palate is fresher than I expected, with good acidity and very fine tannins. Very drinkable."Wine Advocate 90 points

Pago Casa Gran Falcata Arenal Tinto 2012 Product #32119 (In Stock)
Pago Casa Gran Falcata Arenal Tinto 2012 Pago Casa Gran Falcata Arenal Tinto 2012

“Arenal” refers to the sandy, free-draining, soils where Pago Casa Gran grows the grapes for this organically farmed blend of Garnacha Tintorera and Monestrell.  “Falcata” is the name of a special sword that was common in Valencia hundreds of years ago.  Each blade was made to measure for an individual warrior, forged and trimmed to be the same length as their arm.  When the fighter died, his blade was buried with him.

Winemaker Carlos Laso crafts his Arenal to reflect the region’s heritage by marrying the purity and elegance of well-drained, sandy, soils with Valencia’s intense ripeness and lots of minerality and spice from 14 months in French oak.  The wine is dark and deeply colored with powerful aromas of ink, dark black raspberry and a hint of mint.  On the palate it fills your mouth with deep dark fruit complicated by accents of earth, licorice, and chocolate.  The firm, powerful, finish makes it easy to see how this will develop over the next 10 years, but there’s no reason you can’t enjoy it now with grilled lamb!

Convento Oreja Ribera Del Duero Crianza 2012 Convento Oreja Ribera Del Duero Crianza 2012

As the Wine Advocate says, this is "textbook" Ribera del Duero to drink now - 2022.

"Deep ruby. Aromas of blackberry, blueberry, violet and vanilla carry a smoky overtone. Weighty yet lively on the palate, offering juicy dark berry flavors and suave candied lavender and spicecake qualities. Smooth, plush and seamless in character, finishing with repeating spiciness, supple tannins and a lingering note of dark berry preserves."  Vinous (Raynolds) 91 points

"If last year I was impressed with the 2011, the 2012 Crianza from Convento Oreja might be even better. No signs of heat or overripeness here at all but perfectly ripe, terse fruit, integrated, balanced oak and a polished, sleek palate with fine tannins and good acidity. This is a textbook crianza from Ribera del Duero."Wine Advocate 92 points

Clos Marsalette Pessac - Leognan Rouge 2012 Clos Marsalette Pessac - Leognan Rouge 2012

A young estate (created 2002) by the owner of the great St.  Emilion estates La Gaffeliere and La Mondotte, Clos Marsalette has quickly established itself as a leader on the gravely soils of Pessec-Leognan.  A blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc aged 18 months in 50% new French oak.

“From the empire of the Neippergs, this brilliant 2012 Clos Marsalette has a gorgeous nose of Christmas fruitcake, cedar wood, smoked herbs, blackcurrants and jammy cherries. It is medium to full-bodied, silky smooth, very sexy, complex and a total hedonistic, intellectual turn-on. The complexity and nuances that the Neipperg winemaking team is able to get in all of its wines is amazing. This is a beauty and a major sleeper of the vintage.”Wine Advocate 92 points

Bodegas Roda Sela Rioja 2012 Product #32390 (In Stock)
Bodegas Roda Sela Rioja 2012 Bodegas Roda Sela Rioja 2012

"Very aromatic with lavender, mushroom, stone and dark fruits on the nose. Full body, ultra-fine tannins and a long, long finish. Fermented in large French oak vats. Finesse here. Drink or hold. 96% tempranillo, 3% graciano, 1% garnacha. A beauty from a beautiful year." James Suckling 93 points

"Fragrant aromas of ripe red berries, candied rose and incense. Spicy and penetrating in the mouth, offering juicy flavors of raspberry, bitter cherry and allspice. Shows very good focus and lift--and repeating red fruit and floral notes--on the long, gently tannic finish. This wine went through its secondary fermentation in large French oak foudres and was then moved into small, used French oak barrels for another year." Vinous (Raynolds) 91 points

"The 2012 Sela will be released in March 2015, and it’s a great example of Sela. It opens to bright red fruit, more shiny than 2011, and is still pretty young showing faint lactic notes and more traces of the barrel that should be absorbed with time. 2012 could be fresher and more accessible. It’s an elegant and balanced wine, with some fine-grained tannins that will be polished with bottle age. The palate is very tasty and has almost salty flavors that are quite gentle and velvety. In 2012 Sela was a blend of Tempranillo with 3% Graciano and 1% Garnacha. 99,383 bottles were produced."Wine Advocate 90 points

A short and difficult 2012 vintage didn't stop this small, very dedicated, estate from making a lovely Chassagne Rouge.  The aromas are generous and open, giving scents of red currant, cassis, cracked pepper and wet earth.  The palate follows the nose with the addition of some pretty oak spice, a touch of raspberry, and smoke.  It finishes firm with good grip, so it will shine with roast chicken or savory veggie salads after an hour in decanter.

Occidental Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast 2012 Product #31422 (In Stock)
Occidental Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast 2012 Occidental Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast 2012

Steve Kistler formed Occidental to create a smaller, more hands-on, Pinot Noir winery for himself and his daughters, Catherine and Elizabeth.  And, in just its second vintage, Occidental is already a huge success!  As Antonio Galloni said after tasting the estate’s three single-vineyard wines, “"Steve Kistler's 2012 Occidental Pinots are off the charts gorgeous... Readers who can find the Occidental Pinots should not hesitate to grab them, as they are truly magnificent."

Finding the Vinous 96-97+ point single vineyard wines is next to impossible (and, at $125-$175, expensive), so this is your best chance to enjoy Kistler’s benchmark Pinots at a very reasonable price.  The 2012 Sonoma Coast Pinot is made from fruit grown in Steve’s Occidental Station and Bodega Headlands vineyards, both perched on hills bathed in the cool wines flowing through Sonoma’s Petaluma Gap.  The barrels used for this wine were just a touch more ripe and fleshy than Kistler was looking for in his single-vineyard bottlings – but no less delicious!

The wine opens with lovely aromas of crushed raspberry and cherry, cherry blossom, loamy earth and sweet baking spice.  On the palate it’s medium-bodied (at a restrained for California 14.1% alcohol) with generous flavors of tangy raspberry, sweet red cherry, and a nice layer of barrel spice (although hardly oaky!).  The pure fruit flavors keep on flowing through a fine, pure, finish leaving fresh raspberry and spice flavors lingering on.  The fine tannins and fresh acids suggest this will just keep improving over the next 5 years or so, but it’s so delicious now that you’ll be hard put to wait.  A rare and delicious opportunity to enjoy Steve Kistler’s work for those of us not on the mailing list!

Kellerei Kaltern Solos Lagrein Riserva 2012 Product #32345 (In Stock)
Kellerei Kaltern Solos Lagrein Riserva 2012 Kellerei Kaltern Solos Lagrein Riserva 2012

One of Italy's most under-rated red grapes, Lagrein is often made into fun and friendly quaffing wine, perfect for parties and pizza.  But with a little love, Lagrein's fun-loving personality can take on remarkable profundity.  Here the wine grows on alluvial sediments at 250 meters elevation.  The deep, sandy, soils warm easily in spring, allowing the 25-35 year-old Lagrein vines to develop intense color, great power, and layered depth.  Fermentation and aging in French oak plus extra time in bottle brings everything together into a delicious red that's light enough to sip and sophisticated enough to pair with lamb at table.

The wood has pretty much integrated fully now, showing mainly as a rich spice component to the dark red and black berry fruit.  There's a touch of earthy licorice root down somewhere deep, giving the blackberry pie and black raspberry fruit flavors a savory, sophisticated, flair.  Wood and time in bottle have tamed the grape's sometimes agressive tannins, allowing it to finish long and rich and very smooth.  Delicious now - 2022 at least.

Dom JJ Confuron Nuits Saint Georges Les Fleurieres 2012 Product #29035 (In Stock)
Dom JJ Confuron Nuits Saint Georges Les Fleurieres 2012 Dom JJ Confuron Nuits Saint Georges Les Fleurieres 2012

The most open and immediately generous of Confuron's 2012s, in the drinking window from 2015-2025 or so.

“Good red-ruby. Distinctly reduced, gamey aromas of dark berries, licorice and coffee. Similarly reduced in the mouth, but showing good intensity and an attractive sugar/acid balance to the flavors of black fruits, leather, violet and licorice. With its firm tannins and impression of solidity, this is very Nuits-Saint-Georges.”International Wine Cellar 88-90 points

“The 2012 Nuits Saint Georges Les Fleurieres, from the lieu-dit just south of the village (1.23-hectares of vines between 22 and 46 years old), has a well-defined, floral, elegant bouquet that demonstrates good vivacity, a patina of vanilla oak present but knitted with the fruit. The palate is well balanced with tensile tannins, very fine focus and a clean pure finish with crisp blackcurrant and wild strawberry notes that disguise the latent mineralite. This is an excellent Nuits Saint Georges.”Wine Advocate 90-92 points

“The Les Fleurieres offers rich aromas of dark raspberry and plum with forest floor notes. It has a ripe and flavorful palate and is nicely balanced with excellent acidity and firm tannins on the finish. This wine will be even more enjoyable in two years and will provide drinking pleasure over the next 7-10 years.” i-Wine Review 90+ points

Amalie Robert Pinot Noir Dijon Clones 2012 Product #32604 (In Stock)
Amalie Robert Pinot Noir Dijon Clones 2012 Amalie Robert Pinot Noir Dijon Clones 2012

If you like your Willamette Valley Pinot Noir darker, smokier, and a bit more wild, then Amalie Robert Dijon Clones is for you!  Dark berries, cocoa, incense and fresh earth aromas and flavors take center-stage and gain depth from dark, smoky, notes more often found from volcanic Dundee Hills sites. Vibrant acidity keeps the dark fruit fresh and refreshing and sneaky firm tannins make this a great wine at table or in cellar.  Ernie suggests braised pork with white beans or Brussels sprouts with onion and duck bacon.  No argument here!

"Vivid red. Pungent red and dark berry scents are complemented by underbrush, mocha and sandalwood, with a mineral element adding lift. Juicy and concentrated on the palate, with spice-tinged black raspberry and bitter cherry flavors becoming sweeter with aeration. Dusty tannins sneak in late on the long, focused finish, with the berry and spice notes echoing emphatically."  Vinous (Raynolds) 93 points
