Bodegas Borsao Garnacha Tinto 2016 Product #32789 (In Stock)
Bodegas Borsao Garnacha Tinto 2016 Bodegas Borsao Garnacha Tinto 2016

Robert Parker called the 2011 edition of this perennial favorite value red, “Possibly the single greatest dry red wine value in the world.”  The 2016 is as fine and fresh as ever.  This year it blends ripe Garnacha and a splash of Syrah, both grown on the dusty, barren, soils of Spain’s Campo de Borja region.  Naturally grown, hand harvested, and fermented and aged all in tank, it’s a perfect blend of rich, ripe, fruit and stylish, refreshing, structure.

"The flagship 2016 Borsao Garnacha is mostly Garnacha complemented with Syrah. This is also fermented in stainless steel with neutral yeasts and bottled unoaked. The Syrah might give it a little touch and some oomph in the nose, somehow spicy and a touch smoky from the skins of the variety. The palate is fleshy and juicy, very tasty, with unnoticeable tannins. It goes down easily with a velvety sensation. Superb value."Wine Advocate 89 points

Baron de Funes Garnacha Syrah Carinena 2016 Product #32769 (In Stock)
Baron de Funes Garnacha Syrah Carinena 2016 Baron de Funes Garnacha Syrah Carinena 2016

Some of the best wine values in the world come from hidden nooks and crannies of Spain - like this one!  From an old growing region in Aragon, this is a blend of very old vine Garnacha and Syrah done all in tank.  There's fantastic freshness here - especially for Carinena! - with blackberry and black raspberry fruit at the core and a nice, almost blood orange, note on the back. Easy drinking.

Collection Sinsans Cabernet Sauvignon Pays d'Oc 2016 Product #33357 (In Stock)
Collection Sinsans Cabernet Sauvignon Pays d'Oc 2016 Collection Sinsans Cabernet Sauvignon Pays d'Oc 2016

Whatever a happened to Cabernet Sauvignon from the Languedoc?  It was a "thing" a decade ago, and this rich and fleshy Cab suggests it could be a thing again right now!  From terraced vineyards about 7 miles from the Roman city of Nimes, it's 100% Cabernet aged in large oak cask.  Nicely fleshy in texture, it serves up aromas and flavors of ripe raspberry and currant and a touch of spicy oak.  A dried raspberry note adds interest on the spicy but smooth and easy finish.  Certainly a fine match for a good burger or steak, but this will serve as a party pour just as well!

Pago Casa Gran Falcata Blanco 2016 Product #32664 (In Stock)
Pago Casa Gran Falcata Blanco 2016 Pago Casa Gran Falcata Blanco 2016

That the folks at Pago Casa Gran can make balanced, fresh, stylish red wines on the hot, bulk-wine focused, plains of Valencia is surprising enough.  That they could make this utterly delicious, vibrant and aromatic white is pretty absurd!  Here they blend a classic aromatic Spanish white grape - Moscatel (aka the ancient varietal Muscat Blanc) – with France’s Thanksgiving-friendly Gewürztraminer to create a fabulously rich but bone dry beauty.

You'll find a supremely expressive and just a bit wild nose of exotic spice, rose petal and citrus and stone fruit that really jumps out of the glass - even with turkey and pie in the oven, you'll be able to smell this just fine!  Then you'll love how it explodes with flavors of ripe passionfruit, white peach, fresh rose, green plum and spice ranging from ginger to nutmeg to anise.  Best of all, after all that mouth-coating flavor, the wine finishes dry, crisp and minerally, making your mouth water and getting you ready for a big bite of...well, pretty much anything!  Unique, satisfying and delicious.

Tussock Jumper Malbec Tulum Valley 2016 Product #33247 (In Stock)
Tussock Jumper Malbec Tulum Valley 2016 Tussock Jumper Malbec Tulum Valley 2016

I guess you can call the red garment on the cow on the label a “jumper,” but what a small clump of more dense than usual grass (a “Tussock”) has to do with this wine is beyond us.  And since we automatically think “Mendoza” when we see Argentine Malbec, it takes a moment to notice that this is from the Tulum Valley near San Juan, about two hours north of Mendoza.  But what’s clear as soon as you taste it, though, is that this is just a great house red!

This is 100% Malbec grown at lower altitudes than in Mendoza (600 vs 6,000+  feet) at lower alcohol levels (just 13.0%!).  But it takes to wood just as well at its Mendoza cousins, as you’ll notice right away from the way spicy, coffee, scents complement the notes of dark black raspberry, blackberry and plum.  On the palate, it’s fleshy and feels full but not heavy, serving up big spiced blackberry and red raspberry fruit flavors with accents of roasted coffee, cocoa and spice.  Spiced fruit, a touch of vanilla bean, and gentle smoke flavors linger across a broad, smooth, finish.  Fun to sip, nicely matched with anything from pizza to burgers to lamb, and priced to share with a crowd.

Donna Laura Ali Toscana Rosso 2016 Product #33349 (In Stock)

One of our favorite experiences at the tasting table is when we try a wine and immediately think, “Wow – that tastes a lot more expensive than it is!”  That’s exactly what happened when we tried this ripe, plump, and very pleasing Tuscan Sangiovese and what we think you’ll say, too.  The wine opens with bold and very Chianti-like aromas of super-ripe black cherry, crushed violets, sweet tobacco and hints of leather and spice.

Take a sip and it’s even better!  Oodles of black cherry and blackberry fruit, purple flower, spice, leather and cured tobacco leaf flavors that push back deeply on the surprisingly long palate.  The fruit turns brighter and fresher with air, but remains nicely ripe and generous.  The texture is wonderfully and invitingly round and rich – much fleshier than the 13.0% alcohol suggests – and the fruit keeps on pumping out over fine, food-friendly, tannins.  Sure, this will sing with pizza and classic Italian fare, but it’s going to shine just as brightly with burgers or brats off the grill.  A fruity fun bottle at a very fine price.

I know - "Ugni Blanc" doesn't sound very appetizing.  So call it Vermentino and blend it with fleshy textured Columbard and you get a pretty fine summer sipper! Pretty much screams "refreshing" with it's zesty aromas and flavors of cut pineapple, green lime, and fresh grapefruit zest.  Finishes with a touch of herb and nice snap, making this a fine Sauvignon Blanc alternative for hot days.

A fresh, fun, Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc value with just a bit of a twist.  You'll find plenty of classic Kiwi character here, with a big dose of cut grass, ripe green melon and sweet/sour citrus. But the grapefruit runs more Ruby Red than white and the generous texture keeps the wine from turning sharp or astringent.  Terrific sipper, great with seafood, and just a fine all-around value.

La Tremenda Monastrell Alicante 2016 Product #33283 (In Stock)
La Tremenda Monastrell Alicante 2016 La Tremenda Monastrell Alicante 2016

The grape here is Monastrell, better known to many as France’s Mourvedre in its starring role in Bandol and Ch Beaucastel’s Chateauneuf du Pape.  On the high plains of Spain’s Alicante region and under the care of the committed traditionalists at Enrique Mendoza, this marries rich ripeness of fruit with earthy, herbal, complexity and a finish that’s long, firm, but still very easy to enjoy.  Sure, it’s built to pair with rich stews and savory roasted and grilled meats.  But the ripe fruit and silky finish will give plenty of pleasure before the food ever hits the table.

"Their entry-level Monastrell is already the 2016 La Tremenda is sourced from the vineyard that names the wine, from their estate El Chaconero in the village of Villena, a plot at 600 meters altitude planted some 25 years ago. It fermented in stainless steel and matured in French barriques for six months. 2016 is a cooler year than 2014 or 2015, and the wines reflect it. It was not an easy year; they had to do a strict selection of grapes, and it paid off. It has the character of the variety, with its elegant rusticity with a fresh, herbal twist and a palate with fine-grained tannins, nicely textured and with a supple, very tasty finish. This is a superb introduction to Monastrell from Alicante at an incredible price. 50,000 bottles produced."Wine Advocate 92 points

Le Paradou Viognier 2016 Product #32662 (In Stock)
Le Paradou Viognier 2016 Le Paradou Viognier 2016

Too often inexpensive Viognier veers toward the cloying and blowsy, but not this fresh little beauty from the south of France.  Le Paradou opens with lovely aromas of honeysuckle and tropical fruits, but on the palate those tropical fruit aromas become crisp, but still-ripe flavors of pineapple and juicy orange.  This strikes just the balance that an inexpensive, aromatic white should: it's assertive enough to be interesting, but won't overpower everyday food. At a reasonable 13% alcohol, it's balanced enough to pair beautifully with Asian takeout or an entree salad.

Monte Degli Angeli Pinot Noir Monferrato 2016 Product #32690 (In Stock)
Monte Degli Angeli Pinot Noir Monferrato 2016 Monte Degli Angeli Pinot Noir Monferrato 2016

You've got to be willing to think a bit outside the box to find real, honest, Pinot Noir selling for less than $10 these days.  Here we head to Italy's Piemonte region - more famous for Barolo and Barbaresco - to a small family-owned estate run by Brothers Antonio and Paolo Sperone.  The climate here is closer to Burgundy than you'd expect, and it lets the Sperones harvest ripe, juicy, Pinot Noir fruit and then give it 6 months in barrel to soften and gain complexity.  Black cherry and strawberry fruit hold center stage here with accents of smoke and fresh earth.  Juicy in the middle and supported by light, fine, tannin, this is a steal in value Pinot Noir that tastes like...well, Pinot Noir!

Bruni Poggio D' Elsa Cabernet Sangiovese 2016 Product #32137 (In Stock)
Bruni Poggio D' Elsa Cabernet Sangiovese 2016 Bruni Poggio D' Elsa Cabernet Sangiovese 2016

Winemaker Marco Bruni and his siblings named this “Super Tuscan” red for their mom, Elsa – could it be anything other than fantastic?  From Tuscany’s Maremma region, a slice of western Tuscany that gets all of the brilliant “Tuscan sun” that makes Chianti so famous plus cooling breezes from the nearby sea.  It’s sometimes called the “California of Italy” because while Sangiovese (the main grape of Chianti and Brunello) is great here, so is Napa Valley’s Cabernet Sauvignon.  Here, the Bruni’s blend equal parts Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon and age about 30% of the wine in French oak casks.

A sizzling value in super-Tuscan red blends of 50% Sangiovese - for Italian zest and red fruit - and 50% Cabernet Sauvignon - for richness and dark currant fruit - raised 70% in tank and 30% in large oak cask for spice.  It's loaded with black cherry, plum, and black currant fruit aromas and flavors with a hint of cedar and tobacco for complexity.  Juicy like Chianti, rich Cabernet Sauvignon.  Yum!

Poppy Cabernet Sauvignon Paso Robles 2016 Product #32773 (In Stock)
Poppy Cabernet Sauvignon Paso Robles 2016 Poppy Cabernet Sauvignon Paso Robles 2016

Poppy Cabernet Paso Robles has been a customer favorite in the "great value California Cab" segment for years.  How much better is the 2016 edition?  During a "Cheap vs Expensive" blind tasting class this summer, we served 30 customers Poppy Cab next to Joe Wagner's powerhouse Quilt Cabernet Napa 2015 - a Wine Spectator 91 point wine that released at $45.  Tasted blind - not knowing which was which - 20 of 30 tasters thought the Poppy was the $45 wine.  24 of 30 preferred it!

The secret here is the marriage of ripe fruit from family-owned B & E Vineyard and a cutting edge winemaking approach called thermovinification. About half the fruit is heated to 140 degrees, extracting color and flavor and blowing off the pyrazines that can give Paso Cab an unpleasant herbal edge. Mixed back in with juice receiving a traditional fermentation and aged 18 month in French and American oak, this is wine of excellent richness, fine depth, and lovely purity of fruit.  Blueberry, black cherry, currant, licorice, vanilla, and spice aromas and flavors pair with  a round, supple, wine that finishes clean and smooth and remarkably long.  A terrific value if California Cab that moves from back deck to table with style.

Kind of an old-school South-of-France red here with a bit of modern polish.  The blend is old-timey with 40% Grenache, 40% Caladoc, 10% Syrah and 10% Marselan all done in tank.  You'll certainly taste the warm, sunshiny, climate here in ripe plum and black raspberry fruit and there's a nice dose of black olive, thyme and lavender, too.  But the flavors stay as fresh as a daisy right on through the dusty, lightly chewy, finish.  Great all-purpose bistro red at a fine, weeknight, price.
