Ken got to know Freedom Hill vineyard while working with Mark Vlossak at St. Innocent.  So, when he and Erica got access to a small set of rows in 2012, they knew what to do!  In 2015, they harvested ripe - but not overripe! - fruit from blocks of Pommard and Wadenswil clones that gave a perfectly balanced 13.9% alcohol. Fourteen months in 40% new French oak allowed the wine to gain volume, smoothness, and extra complexity.

Based on Wine Advocate’s commentary, this 2015 has much in common with the 93 point 2012.  There’s plenty of Freedom Hill’s dark, smoky, complexity on the nose with a burst of Wadenswil’s plump Bing and black cherry fruit at the core.  The palate is youthfully tight  - as you’d expect, not yet as open as La Combe Verte – but already exciting with savory cherry, cherry pit, and blackberry fruit flowing into a firm, cellar-worthy, finish.  It's certainly powerful, but elegant and finessed, too.  My note from tasting this at the cellar with Erica is spot on:  "That's a winner.  Fantastic.  Really delicious."  Let it rest until next year and drink through 2030.  335 cases made.

"(raised in French oak barrels, 40% of them new) Limpid ruby-red. Explosive aromas of cherry and dark berry liqueur, smoky Indian spices, musky earth and incense take on a sexy floral nuance as the wine stretches out. Fleshy and broad on the palate but surprisingly lithe as well, offering intense blackberry, boysenberry and bitter cherry flavors and hints of candied flowers and cola. Finishes seamless, sweet and extremely long, featuring an echo of juicy blue fruit and chewy tannins that add shape and youthful grip." Vinous (Raynolds) 94
